Devils Battle Red Hawks in 8-6 Non-Conference Loss

MADISON, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought non-conference contest 8-6 to Montclair State University at Robert T. Shields Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Devils (3-6) fell behind 3-0 in the early going before pulling within one goal late in the second half but the Red Hawks (7-3) refused to relinquish the lead in the battle between New Jersey foes.

Junior attack Joelle Manganella paced the Devils offense with three goals on the afternoon, while freshman goalkeeper and reigning MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week Megan Nemeth made 11 stops in net.

Despite a 9-7 edge in draw controls for the Devils, the Red Hawks were the aggressors and outshot the home team 24-13 on the afternoon.

Aided by two goals from Francesca Verrone, the Red Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than 15 minutes into action.

Junior midfielder Brienna Reasoner broke through with the Devils' first score by catching a pass from Manganella and depositing it into the back of the net at the 13:35 mark.

The teams each traded a pair of scores over the remainder of the half and the Red Hawks held a 5-3 lead at the break. Mackenzie Staffordsmith netted a goal with 9:47 to go in the first stanza before Manganella registered her first score of the day, just 22 seconds shy of intermission.

Trailing 6-4 with 12:16 to play in regulation, Manganella made it a one-score game by finishing a feed from Frances Maggio.

However, Montclair State tallied the next two scores, which provided some breathing room with an 8-5 lead.

Manganella then scored with 4:45 to go, but the Red Hawks held off the Devils' attack for the remainder of the contest and secured the victory.

Verrone, Lindsay Lane, and Kasey Maguire each scored two goals for the Red Hawks in the win. Along with Meredith King, Verrone helped the Red Hawks maintain possession as the tandem each tallied a game-high five ground balls.

In addition to her two-goal effort, Reasoner caused four turnovers, snagged three ground balls and won two draw controls on the day for FDU-Florham. The speedy junior midfielder leads the Devils with 16 goals on the campaign.

The Devils return to action next Wednesday, April 6 when they travel to Ramapo College for a 4 p.m. start.
