Devils Launch 10 Home Runs in Twinbill Sweep of DeSales

MADISON, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham softball team continued its power surge by hammering 10 home runs in a two-game sweep of DeSales University on Saturday afternoon at McManus Field. The Devils rolled to a 13-1, five-inning victory in game one and then claimed game two 11-8.

FDU-Florham (13-9, 7-3 MAC Freedom) has now hit 19 homers over its last four games and has a six-game winning streak.

On an afternoon where the Devils' offense was locked in from the first pitch, senior backstop Wynne McCann led the way with a perfect 7-for-7 performance including two home runs, seven RBI and four runs scored.

Sophomore center fielder Marlena Bevilacqua continues to move up the Devils' stolen base leaderboard and now has 21 thefts on the season, which is the fourth most in single-season history.

Not to be outdone, after launching four long balls on Thursday, sophomore third baseman Taylor Torre homered three more times today and now has 10 home runs on the season, which is the second most by a Devil in a season.

Game 1:
The Devils shocked the Bulldogs by hammering six home runs over the first three frames, which broke the game wide open. The offensive outburst was more than enough support for starter Syndey Worek, who picked up the victory in both games and now ranks fourth all-time in career wins with 34.

Worek went the distance, while limiting the Bulldogs (4-21, 1-9 MAC Freedom) to one run on five hits. She also struck out seven hitters on the afternoon.

The Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the home first thanks to a solo blast by Paige Lillie and an RBI double by Torre.

After DeSales got a run back in the top of the second, the Devils proceeded to break the game open in the bottom of the inning with six runs on four hits. Jaclyn Herrington opened with a two-run blast over the left-center field fence, then Lillie smacked a solo blast to left. Torre provided the biggest blow of the frame by crushing a three-run bomb over the center field fence, which gave the Devils an 8-1 lead.

The Devils tacked on five more runs in the home third, highlighted by a Wynne McCann three-run homer and another solo blast by Torre.

The home run totals have piled up this season for the Devils as McCann and Nikki Caruso each have seven, while Lillie now has six.

Game 2:
The Bulldogs struck first in the second game of the day as starting pitcher Leann Panconi helped her own cause by sending a solo homer over the center field fence.

But FDU-Florham continued to use the long ball to do its damage as the Devils responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning. McCann desposited a grand slam over the center field fence and then Bevilacqua, hit her first collegiate home run, which delighted her teammates. The Devils' speedy leadoff hitter finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored in the game.

DeSales chipped away and eventually cut the deficit to 8-5 before a two-run blast by Torre and a run-scoring double by Bevilacqua helped seal the victory.

McCann continued her outstanding senior season with a 4-for-4 effort in game two, while fellow senior Herrington added two hits in the win.

The Devils are back in action tomorrow when they host New York University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
