Capobianco's Overtime Goal Sends Devils Past Brewers

MADISON, N.J. – Brianna Capobianco's goal just 14 seconds into overtime propelled the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham women's lacrosse team to a 12-11 victory over Vassar College on Wednesday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.

The contest was a back and forth battle with each team trading scores until Capobianco netted the sudden-victory goal in the first overtime. Capobianco's goal was the ninth of the season for the senior attack.

Junior midfielder Brienna Reasoner led the way for the Devils (3-4) with a game-high four goals and now leads the team with 13 on the campaign. The Devils' effort in chasing down draw controls led to a 15-10 edge over the Brewers (2-2) and proved to be the difference on the game's final play.

The two teams traded scores for most of the first half until Reasoner gave the Devils a 5-4 halftime edge with her second goal of the day. The junior mid took a clearing pass from goalie Megan Nemeth and outran the Brewers 75 yards down the field before finishing off the goal at the other end just 37 seconds shy of halftime.

Vassar remained undeterred and registered the first two goals of the second half with strikes by Kim Mulvehill and Isabelle Goldstein to take a 6-5 advantage. However, Brittni Calleo answered for the Devils just 25 seconds later with her second of two goals on the day, which pulled the Devils even with 24:26 to play in regulation.

Less than two minutes later, Reasoner put the Devils back on top by catching a feed from Samantha Holerritter on the run and whipping it past the Vassar netminder.

The Devils held a two-goal lead in the final ten minutes but Mulvehill and Goldstein netted the final two tallies in regulation to force overtime.

FDU-Florham wasted no time sealing the victory in overtime as Reasoner scooped the draw control and dished it up to Capobianco, who juked her way through the Brewers' defense and swiftly buried the game-winner.

Nemeth made seven stops in net for the Devils to earn the victory, several of which from point-blank range, including four free position shots.

Holleritter contributed in a big way with five draw controls and added her first goal of the season. Defensively, Kelsey Ryan and Leah Eble each caused two turnovers and combined to snag five ground balls.

Goldstein paced the Brewers in the loss with three goals, while Mulvehill finished with two and three assists.

The Devils have seven days off before their next contest when they travel to Union, N.J. to take on Kean University at 4 p.m.
