RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The No. 3 seeded FDU-Florham women's soccer team fell in a 2-1 overtime heartbreaker to the No. 2 seeded William Paterson Pioneers in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament at Gaelic Park.
The defeat completes a 9-9-4 season for the Devils who earned two post-season berths.
FDU-Florham led the game most of the way when senior midfielder
Brittni Calleo beat three defenders and fired a goal into the net just 10 minutes into the game to put the Devils up, 1-0, on the first shot of the game.
Still the Pioneers kept up the pressure, outshooting the Devils 18-4 throughout the contest.
William Paterson was unable to break through FDU-Florham's solid defense of
Dari Lyons,
Ashley Granato,
Nicolette Roberts and
Missy Orlando which blocked several shots in front of senior goalie
Annie George who made five saves.
However, in the 63rd minute, the tides changed as William Paterson's Tori Woetzel knocked in a goal off a free kick to tie up the game and evetually force an overtime period.
It took the Pioneers' Marisa Adelman just two minutes into overtime to break through the defense and beat George on a one-on-one situation to notch the game-winning tally and prevent FDU-Florham from advancing.
The defeat was final match for the six seniors of George, Orlando, Calleo, Granato,
Kristen Fila and
Gabby Diaco.
