GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The FDU-Florham women's lacrosse raddled off a 13 game winning streak that began midway through the regular season and brought them to the NCAA Tournament, but on Sunday afternoon in Gettysburg, Pa., the Devils streak was snapped by the No. 5 ranked Gettysburg Bullets in a 13-6 loss.
Sophomore attack Brienna Reasoner (Flemington, N.J.) was efficient on the offensive end, scoring four of the Devils (17-4) six goals on just six shots. Alongside a great outing from Reasoner was a tremendous performance in goal by Grace Warburton who tallied 13 saves and ended her illustrious four year career with 534 career stops.
The Devils fell behind early against the Bullets after Gettysburg (16-3) grabbed a 6-0 lead midway through the first half. Bridget Kenny and Katie Landry led the team with two goals apiece during that scoring run. After overcoming an early deficit yesterday to capture the program's first ever NCAA Tournament victory, the Devils looked to do the same against the Bullets.
With a little over 12 minutes left to play in the half, senior midfielder Courtney Rendinaro (Hillsborough, N.J.) had possession of the ball and she found a cutting Reasoner for the first FDU-Florham score of the contest.
The Bullets managed to cage one more goal in the half on a Samantha Aiello score with a man-up advantage.
Entering the second half, the Devils found themselves down 7-1 but three minutes in, Frances Maggio (Bound Brook, N.J.) sent a quick pass over to sophomore Joelle Manganella (Kenvil, N.J.) and she rifled a shot into the back of the net.
Less than a minute later Brianna Capobianco (Williston Park, N.Y.) was awarded a free position shot and she elected to not take the shot but instead send a pass over to Reasoner. Once Reasoner received the ball she took a shot and scored to make it a 7-3 game.
With the Devils making strides on the offensive end, the Bullets were able to counter with two goals of their own to extend the lead back to six. However, the Devils narrowed the margin once again when Rendinaro found Reasoner for a score.
Trailing 9-5 with 10 minutes left to play in the game, Manganella was fouled and scored on a free position shot to pull the Devils within three goals. The sophomore attack finished the NCAA Tournament with six goals in the combined two games.
The Bullets went on to add three more goals in the game and stunt the Devils comeback efforts, but with time winding down, Reasoner netted a free position shot for her fourth goal.
