MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham women's lacrosse team extended their winning streak to five by coasting to a 17-3 victory over Delaware Valley University at Robert T. Shields Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Devils (9-3, 2-0 Freedom) never trailed in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The Aggies (2-7, 0-2 Freedom), who added the varsity program this season, were making their first trip to Madison.
Draw control dominance allowed the Devils to maintain possession for most of the win, as FDU-Florham claimed 21-of-22, including all eight second-half draws.FDU-Florham wasted no time asserting itself, as sophomore
Noelle Shirey (Pine Beach, N.J.) took the opening draw control, sprinted 50 yards to the net, and buried the game's first goal in just 13 seconds.
Shirey's goal set the tone for the afternoon as the Devils went off on a run. Two minutes later fellow second-year
Brittni Calleo (Bayville, N.J.) put the Devils in front with an unassisted strike.
Senior midfielder
Courtney Rendinaro (Hillsborough, N.J.) followed with two scores as the Devils tallied the first seven goals of the contest and led 7-0 midway through the half. At that point, the home team had completely dominated time of possession and prevented the Aggies from attempting a single shot
Delaware Valley finally broke into the scoring column when
Lydia Spakosky netted a free-position goal with 14:50 to go in the opening stanza. Less than a minute later, Shirey struck again with her 14
th goal of the season, which increased the Devils' lead to 8-1.
The Devils tacked on four more goals by halftime and took an insurmountable 12-1 advantage into the break.
With the game fully in hand, FDU-Florham netted the first four goals of the second half and sealed the comfortable victory.
Nine different Devils scored in the win, including freshman
Cassidy Vastano (Hillsborough, N.J.), who netted her first collegiate goal.
Senior attack
Dana Amorosi (Deptford, N.J.) led all scorers with four goals, while Rendinaro scored three times and handed out four assists. Shirey chipped in three goals, while adding a game-high six draw controls to her ledger.
FDU-Florham continues Freedom Conference play when they visit King's College this Saturday, April 11 at 1 p.m.
