Madison, N.J. - In their final series of the 2015 campaign, the FDU-Florham softball team took down the NYU Violets in game one of a doubleheader 4-1, but then fell 7-5 in game two on Wednesday afternoon at McManus Field.
Junior Sydney Worek (Bordentown, N.J.) pieced together several outstanding starts in the ladder half of the season and in game one on Wednesday she was brilliant, tossing a strong seven innings while only surrendering one earned run, four hits and striking out five.
Both offenses were quieted early, but it was the bats of the Devils (10-22) that woke up first and in the bottom half of the fourth, Nikki Caurso (Madison, N.J.) notched a single and stole second base. After recording the second out of the inning, the Violets (10-24) pitched to Wynne McCann (Boyertown, Pa.) and she rifled an RBI double to bring Caruso home for a 1-0 lead.
The Devils offense continued to put runs on the board in the bottom half of the fifth when Michele Mangini (West Babylon, N.Y.) hit a single and senior Christina Legotti (Plainview, N.Y.) doubled. With two runners on, Colleen Moriarty (New Rochelle, N.Y.) came up and hit into a fielder's choice but Mangini came around to score on the play. The Devils then loaded the bases up after Marlena Bevilacqua (East Brunswick, N.J.) drew a walk. Caruso was due up next and she got a pitch she could hit and brought two runners in by rocketing a two-RBI double into the outfield.
NYU managed to plate its first run in the top half of the sixth when Kahala Bonsignore doubled and came around to score on a Molly Webber RBI single. With one last chance to add some runs, the Violets were shut down by Worek as she closed out her season with a game-ending strikeout.
Game two featured a lot more offense from both teams and it was the Devils who got on the board first with a Caruso home run in the bottom half of the first inning. However, the Violets came right back in the second and after Webber walked and advanced to second on a Val Schwein single, Natalie Evans came up and singled to bring in a run and tie the game up at 1-1.
The Violets took their first lead of the afternoon in the third when Colby Tarsitano doubled and later came around to score on a Webber fielder's choice. Holding on to a 2-1 lead, the Violets got two baserunners on in the top half of the fifth for Bonsignore, who sent the ball over the outfield fence for a three-run home run.
After the Devils added a run in the bottom half of the fifth, the Violets came out in the sixth and put two more runs on the board to take a 7-2 lead.
In the seventh, Moriarty got things started for FDU-Florham with a double and after a Jaclyn Herrington (Huntington, N.Y.) walk, Caruso came through again with an RBI double for the Devils. Following the Caruso hit, Legotti stepped up to the plate in her final career at bat and notched an RBI single. Trailing by just three runs with no outs and two runners on, the Devils added another run on a Kailee Sullivan (Monroe, N.Y.) RBI single.
However, the Violets were able to successfully record three consecutive outs to halt the Devils late rally and steal game two from FDU-Florham 7-5. Â
