MADISON, N.J. – FDU-Florham senior right-hander
AJ Pichalski (Iselin, N.J.)tossed one of the best games of his collegiate career in leading the Devils to an exciting 2-1 walk-off victory against Manhattanville College on Friday afternoon.
After a spring filled with turbulent weather, the Devils (2-11, 1-2 Freedom) finally played their first home game of the season and it was worth the wait. Pichalski (1-2) threw a complete-game, four-hit shutout, while striking out a career-best 12 batters to earn the victory.
The Valiants (8-9, 3-4 Freedom) entered the game with a team batting average of .326 but were silenced by the Devils' senior. Pichalski retired the first seven Valiants before Manhattanville's centerfielder
Nick Euvino broke through with a single. But Pichalski responded by striking out the next batter and then Euvino was thrown out by FDU-Florham catcher
Alex Geramita (Old Tappan, N.J.) attempting to swipe second base, which ended the inning.
FDU-Florham got on the board in the home half of the third, when
Josh DellaPietro (Bayville, N.J.)
Frankie Tassielli (Florham Park, N.J.) and Geramita each singled, which set up a scoring opportunity. Tassielli eventually crossed the plate representing the first run thanks to a Manhattanville error.
The Valiants scratched across an unearned run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1.
Kevin Brady slapped the key hit with a one-out double and then scored on a Devils' throwing error.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Devils threatened after
Vinny Bonaccorso (Toms River, N.J.) singled and stole second but Manhattanville starter
Michael Lyon retired the next three batters in order and escaped the jam.
Pichalski locked in and allowed just two base runners over the final five innings. The senior right-hander finished strong by striking out the side in the top of the ninth, which set the stage for the home team's heroics.
FDU-Florham shortstop
Nick DeAngelis (East Hanover, N.J.) began the home ninth with a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by DellaPietro. After a Tassielli free pass and a lineout, junior left fielder
James Dertouzos (Waldwick, N.J.) delivered the game-winning hit by dropping an opposite field liner into shallow right center, which plated DeAngelis and gave the Devils the victory.
Dertouzos finished 3-for-5 on the afternoon, including the game-winning RBI.
These two teams meet again tomorrow, April 4 when the Devils travel up to Purchase, N.Y. for a doubleheader, which kicks off at 3 p.m.
