DALLAS, Pa. – The FDU-Florham women's lacrosse team secured home-field advantage and the number one seed in the 2015 Freedom Conference Tournament by edging Misericordia University 13-11 on Saturday afternoon at McGeehan Field.
The Devils (14-3, 6-0 Freedom), who extended their winning streak to 10 in a row, will host Eastern University this Wednesday, April 29 at 4 p.m. in a conference semifinal matchup.
Misericordia (8-8, 5-1 Freedom) dropped to the two seed and will play at home against King's College in the other semifinal contest on Wednesday.
On Saturday, the Devils trailed 7-5 at the break but came storming back in the second half to come away with the victory.
Senior
Courtney Rendinaro (Hillsborough, N.J.) led FDU-Florham with four goals and four assists, while
Joelle Manganella (Kenvil, N.J.) netted three goals and handed out two helpers in the win.
Allie Elmes opened the scoring for the Cougars with a free position shot before
Brooke North snuck a shot under the crossbar, which gave the home team a 2-0 lead six minutes into play.
Rendinaro answered with a short-handed strike but Misericordia's
Erin Baker followed with a goal and FDU-Florham trailed 3-1 with 14:07 to go in the half.
Over the next 10 minutes, Manganella and Rendinaro took over. Rendinaro set up two Manganella scores, just one minute apart, before burying a feed from
Brittni Calleo (Bayville, N.J.) and adding an unassisted strike with 5:12 remaining.
With the Devils now leading 5-3, the Cougars closed the half with a flurry by countering with four-unanswered goals of their own -- three by North -- and entered intermission on top 7-5. North led all scorers with five tallies in the loss and has 37 on the season.
Noelle Shirey (Pine Beach, N.J.) kicked off the second half with unassisted strike before sophomore
Brienna Reasoner (Flemington, N.J.) got in on the action by hammering home a pass from Manganella, which knotted the contest at 7-7.
The two teams each traded a pair of goals before FDU-Florham junior
Brianna Capobianco (Williston Park, N.Y.) put the Devils in front 10-9.
The Devils' lead was short-lived as Baker netted her second score of the game 90 seconds later, which tied things at 10-10. But FDU-Florham remained undeterred as Reasoner and
Caitlyn McGinley (Mount Laurel, N.J.) each finished off Rendinaro passes and put the Devils in front for good.
In addition to her crucial goal, McGinley added four caused turnovers, while Reasoner and Shirey each caused three in the win.
The Devils will now take on the Eagles for the second time in eight days as FDU-Florham topped Eastern 16-7 last Wednesday in St. Davids, Pa.
