DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – After the FDU-Florham baseball team walked off twice against Delaware Valley University on Sunday, the Aggies returned the favor by using their last at bat to top the Devils 11-10 in 10 innings on Wednesday night.
The Devils (6-17, 4-7), who are in the midst of an arduous stretch of games, overcame an 8-0 deficit to tie the game before ultimately falling in extra innings.
Batting third for the first time this season, FDU-Florham centerfielder
Frankie Tassielli (Florham Park, N.J.) went 3-for-6 with two runs, while
Vinny Bonaccorso (Toms River, N.J.) knocked in two runs in a 3-for-5 effort.
The wild Wednesday affair saw the two teams combine for 21 runs, 28 hits, 12 walks and seven errors.
The Aggies (8-12, 2-7 Freedom) plated six runs on five hits in the opening frame before adding two more tallies in the second.
With the bases loaded, Freedom Conference Player of the Week,
Nick Meoli (East Meadow, N.Y.) came through with an RBI single, which resulted in two runs scoring after an Aggie error.
Trailing 8-2 in the top of the fifth, the Devils continued to chip away when Bonaccorso delivered a run-scoring single through the left side of the infield. FDU-Florham catcher
Alex Geramita (Old Tappan, N.J.) followed with an RBI-knock that produced an additional run thanks to another Delaware Valley miscue and the deficit was cut to three.
In the top of the seventh, FDU-Florham pulled even with Bonaccorso and
Kevin Sinclair (Fairfield, Conn.) each knocking in a run.
The Aggies responded by retaking the lead in the home half of the eighth with a suicide squeeze play but the Devils quickly answered in the top of the ninth. After a Meoli walk, a Bonaccorso single, and a sacrifice by Geramita,
Ben Dranow (New City, N.Y.) ripped a two-run single that gave the Devils their first lead of the game, 9-8.
Again, Delaware Valley countered in the bottom of the frame when centerfielder
Kyle Wenger drew a game-tying bases loaded walk.
In the 10
th,
Josh DellaPietro (Bayville, N.J.) earned a leadoff walk but was thrown out at second base trying to advance on
James Dertouzos' (Waldwick, N.J.) sacrifice bunt attempt and the next two Devils were retired in order.
FDU-Florham reliever
Steven Smiegocki (Hamilton, N.J.) got a leadoff ground out to start the bottom of the inning but his defense let him down after that. The next batter,
Matt DeWald hit a ground ball to the right side that was fielded by Meoli but some confusion at first base resulted in an errant throw, which wound up in the Devils' dugout and allowed DeWald to advance to second. One batter later, DeWald came around to score as the game-winning run when a sharp grounder to shortstop was thrown wide of first base, resulting in the 11-10 final.
Delaware Valley's
Casey Paholski pitched two innings in relief to earn the victory, while Smiegoski went 1.1 allowed two runs (one earned) for his first loss of the season.
The Devils have an off day tomorrow before retuning back to action on Friday when they host Wilkes University at 3:30 p.m.
