Softball Rolls to Sweep of Aggies

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The FDU-Florham softball team swept a doubleheader at Delaware Valley College by blanking the Aggies 8-0 in game one before swiping game two 13-2.

The Devils (3-9, 2-2 Freedom) received excellent starting pitching in game one from freshman Audrie Thomas (Belford, N.J.), who tossed a complete game, five-inning, shutout, allowing just one hit and striking out three to pick up her second victory of the season.

In game two, Brittany Funicelli (Whippany, N.J.) earned the first win of her collegiate career by tossing three innings, allowing two unearned runs and striking out three.

Offensively, reigning Freedom Conference Player of the Week Paige Lillie (Mount Laurel, N.J.) paced the Devils in game one by going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. The second-year utility player currently leads the team in RBI (12) and runs scored (13).

The top of FDU-Florham's lineup was responsible for most of the damage in the second game, as the trio of Marlena Bevilacqua (East Brunswick, N.J.), Rebecca DeCarlo (Greenwich, Conn.), and Nikki Caruso (Madison, N.J.) combined for seven hits, seven RBI, and seven runs in the win.

The Devils wasted no time jumping on the Aggies in game one, as Bevilacqua walked, stole second and later scored on an RBI-double by DeCarlo. Lillie followed with a run-scoring single and the Devils held a 2-0 lead after a half inning of play.

The two-run lead was more than enough for Thomas, who had it working all afternoon. The freshman right-hander cruised through her five innings of work, limiting the Aggies to just one hit in the abbreviated victory.

In game two, the Devils again netted a first-inning run and then went on break the game open in the second frame. DeCarlo launched her second home run of the season, this one a three-run blast, which gave the Devils a 4-0 lead.

Two batters later, Lillie plated a run with a double and then Wynne McCann (Boyertown, Pa.) delivered her own run-scoring double, which stretched the lead to 6-0 after two innings of play. Last weekend, McCann became the Devils' all-time leader in home runs by launching the 23rd of her three-year career.

With Funicelli holding the Aggies down, FDU-Florham's offense tacked on to the lead in the third frame. Bevilacqua scored a run with a double, before Caruso netted two more with a double to right field.

Funicelli, with two innings of relief from Worek, tamed the Delaware Valley bats, which completed the sweep.

The Devils return to action tomorrow, April 2, when they host Manhattanville College in a Freedom Conference matchup. The Devils will be collecting a $3 donation, with all proceeds going to The Cure Starts Now Foundation in honor of Lauren Hill.
