Devils on to the Sweet 16 Following 91-75 Win Over UNE

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham women's basketball team is Sweet 16-bound following their 91-75 victory over University of New England in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament at the Ferguson Recreation Center on Saturday night.

The Devils (28-1) will take on SUNY Geneseo next Friday, March 13 with location and time to be determined. Geneseo topped Muhlenberg College 69-54 in its Second Round game on Saturday.

FDU-Florham sophomore guard Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J.) was brilliant in the win compiling 28 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists to lead the Devils to the victory. Additionally, McDonough set the tone for her team at the free throw line by converting all 11 of her attempts, much to the delight of head coach Marc Mitchell. As a team, the Devils knocked down 25-of-27 from the charity stripe for a season-best 92.6 percent.

The Nor'easters flourished in the early going and held a 10-point advantage, 23-13, with 8:37 to play in the opening stanza. UNE senior Kelly Coleman led the charge with 16 points and five rebounds on 7-of-10 shooting. FDU-Florham struggled to find a basket and started just 4-for-20 from the field.

With 7:54 to play in the half, the defending champs began their comeback when senior guard Kyra Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) scored five-straight points and two minutes later, the Devils pulled even thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from senior guard Leigh-Ann Lively (Bangor, Pa.). Lively, the Devils' all-time leader in 3-pointers fired up the crowd by earning a rare four-point play on her second trey and converted at the line to even the score at 27-27.

The Devils closed the half with a 21-12 run, which sent the defending champs into the break with a three-point edge.

That momentum carried over into the second half, as the home team stormed out of the break by scoring the first seven points of the period.  Junior guard Alicia Cox (Vineland, N.J.) buried a corner three off of a feed from McDonough. Then, McDonough and Cox each netted lay-ups and the Devils had a 49-39 lead.  McDonough countered a Coleman bucket by cashing a three-pointer, which brought the Ferguson Recreation Center crowd to its feet.

Later in the half, McDonough hit Dayon with a great entry pass, which resulted in a lay-up and the Devlis' largest lead of the contest at 19 points, 66-47.

With just under five minutes to go, the Nor'easters used an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to single digits but McDonough and Lively sealed the win for FDU-Florham by taking care of business at the free throw line.

McDonough's 28 points are a career-best for the second year guard, as she came just two helpers shy of registering the program's second-ever triple-double.

As has been the case throughout the season, the Devils featured a balanced attack as five players scored in double-figures. Senior guard Kara Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) scored 16 points, Cox had 12 and Lively tallied 10. Kyra Dayon registered a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards, while last night's star Shalette Brown (Somerset, N.J.) hauled in 16 rebounds to go along with eight points.

Coleman played outstanding for the Nor'easters and matched McDonough with a game-high 28 points, while adding nine rebounds and three steals to her ledger. UNE's Meghan Gribbin and Sadie DiPierro scored 18 and 17 points, respectively. DiPierro had the touch from long-range and buried five of her 12 shots from behind the arc.
