UNION, N.J. -- With some favorable weather conditions, the FDU-Florham baseball team was finally able to open up the 2015 season and on Saturday afternoon, the Devils were shutout 6-0 by the No. 7/13 Kean University Cougars in Union, N.J.
It was a rough day at the plate for the Devils' batters, who were nearly held hitless by seniors Mike Daley and Matthew Wagner. Â Daley earned the win after tossing 6.1 scoreless innings. He walked six and only allowed one hit.
Senior AJ Pichalski (Iselin, N.J.) got the start on the hill for the Devils (0-1) but he had a difficult time containing the Cougars' (2-0) bats. Pichalski allowed six runs in 4.1 innings pitched.
With one out in the bottom of the second inning, Pichalski was in a bases loaded jam after Andy Lopez and Ryan Reitmeyer notched back-to-back singles and Ryan Kelley drew a walk. However, Pichalski was able to limit the damage and only allowed a single run once Michael Kendal hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the third, Pichalski was in another bases loaded jam and this time Reitmeyer doubled into left center scoring two runs. The Cougars went on to score another run on an RBI single in the fourth.
Looking to add to their 4-0 lead, the Cougars tacked on two more runs in the fifth after Kelley knocked in a runner on an RBI single and later came around to score on a wild pitch. Â
The Devils had something brewing in the top of the sixth after Daley walked three batters. However, he successfully worked out of the jam and prevented a Devils baserunner from scoring.
Freshman Christopher Franco (Wayne, N.J.) had the Devils lone hit in the game and it came in the sixth inning. Following the Franco single, Wagner replaced Daley on the mound and after recording the second out, he picked off Franco at second base to end the inning. Â
FDU-Florham will head on the road to take on Centenary College on Tuesday, March 10, at 3:30 p.m.
