PURCHASE, N.Y. – A season-high nine runs was not enough as the FDU-Florham baseball team was defeated by the Purchase College Panthers 13-9 Wednesday night in Purchase, N.Y.
Sophomore John Armstrong (Cranford, N.J.) got the start for the Devils (1-9) and he was tagged right away with six quick runs by the Panthers (4-1) in the bottom of the first. The Panthers chased Armstrong off the mound after he was unable to record an out in the inning. Senior Joe Hofmann replaced Armstrong and after one run crossed the plate, he worked his way out of the inning.
Trailing 6-0 entering the top of the second, the Devils countered with back-to-back doubles from freshman Christopher Franco (Wayne, N.J.) and junior Vinny Bonaccorso (Scotch Plains, N.J.). Bonaccorso eventually came around to score to cut the deficit to four.
The Devils added another run when Frankie Tassielli (Florham Park, N.J.) crossed the plate in the third inning. The Panthers bats were calmed after their first inning explosion up until the bottom of the fifth. With one out and two runners on, an Anthony Bambach single to left brought in the first run of the inning. Two batters later, Bambach came around to score on a Jay Ruiz single to right. Following the Ruiz single, Teofilo Ramirez and Chris Triano knocked back-to-back triples to bring in two more runs to cap off a five-run inning.
By stringing together a few hits, the Devils started to climb back into the game and cut into the large deficit. Franco led off the inning with a walk and he scored after Sam Coutoufos (Edison, N.J.) notched an RBI single. Sophomore Nick DeAngelis (East Hanover, N.J.) followed the Coutoufos hit with an RBI double.
With the bases loaded, Tassielli drew a walk and another FDU-Florham run crossed the plate. The Panthers then yanked their starter, Lukas Chin, and brought in Jacob Acee from the bullpen. He faced off against junior Kevin Sinclair (Fairfield, CT), who flied out center field, but brought in a run on the sacrifice fly. The Devils tacked on their fifth run of the inning after a James Dertouzos (Waldwick, N.J.) RBI single into left.
In the top of the seventh, Bonaccorso stepped up to the plate and sent the ball over the wall for his first home run of the season. More importantly, the Devils only trailed by two runs after the blast by Bonaccorso.
However, the Devils' bats were blanked the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the Panthers added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 13-8 victory over the Devils. It was a successful night at the plate for the Panthers who totaled 17 hits in the game. Vazquez earned the win for Purchase on the mound, only allowing two hits and one run in four innings.
The Devils were led by Bonacocorso, who went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.
