MADISON, N.J. – After their nation-best, 53-game winning streak was snapped on Saturday, the No.3/4 FDU-Florham women's basketball team responded in impressive fashion by rolling to a 96-55 victory over Manhattanville College on Wednesday night at Ferguson Recreation Center.
Shalette Brown (Somerset, N.J.) continued her phenomenal junior campaign by showing off her versatility with 24 points, 12 rebounds, seven steals, and four assists in the win. Brown's double-double was her seventh of the season and her second in as many outings.
Not to be outdone, the Devils' all-time leading 3-point shooter
Leigh-Ann Lively (Bangor, Pa.) had it working on Wednesday night and knocked down five treys and finished with 17 points on the night. The five 3-pointers give Lively 58 on the season, which ties her with teammate
Kara Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) for the most all-time in a single-season. Dayon accomplished the feat last year during the Devils' championship run.
FDU-Florham (21-1, 10-1 Freedom) wasted no time getting to work and immediately jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Sparked by Brown's outstanding play on both ends of the floor, the Devils increased their cushion to 25-7 with 11:32 to go in the opening half.
Lively's trifecta with 3:16 to go in the stanza gave the Devils their largest lead of the half at 28 points, 50-22. The senior guard buried four shots from downtown in the opening half and finished with 14 points, while Brown went off for 19 points, seven steals and six boards prior to intermission.
By the time the halftime horn had sounded, the Valiants had already matched their season average of 19 turnovers.
In the second half, the Valiants did a better job of protecting the basketball and only turned it over five times but it didn't matter as FDU-Florham's offense was clicking on all cylinders.
Featuring a balanced attack, the Devils extended their lead up to 45 points as they sealed the comfortable victory. Five Devils reached double-figures in the win, as
Kyra Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) 13 points,
Kara Dayon 11 points, and
Delisha Thompson (East Orange, N.J.) 10 points, accompanied Brown and Lively. Additionally, Kara added a team-high six assists, while Kyra hauled in eight rebounds.
After allowing Manhattanville's
Alyson Caiazzo to amass a triple-double in their first meeting this season, FDU-Florham's defense kept the nation's leading rebounder in check tonight with nine points and 12 rebounds on 4 of 9 shooting.
Ashley Raaf topped the scoresheet for the Valiants with 13 points, while
Sarah Kelley provided a spark off of the bench with nine points and five rebounds in the loss.
In their next contest, FDU-Florham hosts DeSales University, this Saturday, February 14 at 1 p.m. Saturday's game will be the Devils' annual "Pink Game" for breast cancer awareness.
