ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The No. 9 FDU-Florham women's basketball team completed its two-game sweep at the Dan Greene Memorial Invitational by downing host St. Mary's College of Maryland 99-55 on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils (2-0) used a 33-7 third quarter to bust open the game and topple the Seahawks (1-1), who had no answer for junior center
Rachel Groom.
Groom exploded for 27 points and six rebounds on 9-of-11 shooting in just her second game back after missing all of last season with an injury. The junior center dominated from start to finish and in addition to her efficient shooting from the field, knocked down 9-of-11 shots at the free throw line. The 27 point-effort is a career best for Groom, who was named to the All-Tournament Team.
After a cold shooting performance in the season opener, the Devils found the touch on Saturday, registering a 45 percent shooting effort as a team.
Defensively, the Devils' tenacious presence was front and center, forcing 28 turnovers and limiting the Seahawks to just 27.1 percent shooting.
Groom and sophomore guard
Alyssa McDonough pushed the Devils to a 15-point halftime lead. The duo combined for 32 of the team's 50 points and shot 10-for-15 from the floor. McDonough finished with 21 points, four rebounds and three helpers.
The Devils surged out of the halftime break with a 29-2 run, which stretched the lead to 42 points. McDonough, Groom and senior forward
Shalette Brown led the charge by converting turnovers into points at the other end of the floor, while freshman
Mariah Martinez knocked down a trey during the game-breaking run.
With the large lead, the Devils coasted to the finish and closed out the 44-point win.
After notching a double-double in the first game, Brown repeated her performance with another, corralling 10 rebounds, while scoring 14 points in the win. She was named Dan Greene Memorial MVP for her outstanding effort over the two-game tilt. Freshman forward
Jhade Aird also chipped in eight points and seven rebounds for the nationally-ranked Devils.
Maya Cooper led the way for the Seahawks with 11 points and four rebounds in the loss.
The Devils return to action this Tuesday, November 17 when they head to Hackettstown, N.J. to take on Centenary College at 7 p.m.
