BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Junior forward
Shalette Brown (Somerset, N.J.) exploded for 19 points and 20 rebounds to lead the top-ranked FDU-Florham women's basketball team to an 81-59 rout of Brooklyn College on Thursday night at West Quad Center.
The rebounding effort is a career-high for Brown, who totaled 10 double-doubles last season. With the win, the Devils (13-0) extend their winning streak to 46 games, while snapping the Bulldogs (8-4) six-game unbeaten stretch.
After Brooklyn opened the game by scoring seven of the first nine points, the Devils responded with a 16-2 run to stake an 18-9 lead 5:50 into action. As has been the case throughout the season, the Devils displayed a balanced attack with six different Devils registering baskets over that stretch.
Nine different Devils scored in the opening stanza as the nation's top-ranked team closed the half with a 10-0 run. Following a layup by Brooklyn's
Megan Campbell, FDU-Florham flourished. First, freshman guard
Sydney Clopton (Baltimore, Md.) drained a 3-ball, then a layup by
Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J.) and a jumper by
Kyra Dayon (Trenton, N.J.). Finally, Brown capped the first period by drawing contact on a layup and finishing the 3-point play at the free throw line, which sent the Devils into the break with a 49-33 lead.
Brown nearly amassed her double-double in the opening stanza as the third-year forward hauled in 13 boards and added nine points to her ledger, while creating havoc on the defensive end with four steals. Senior guard
Kara Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) led the Devils at the break with 12 points and knocked down 2-of-3 from downtown.
The Bulldogs began the second half with a 3-pointer but the Devils quickly countered with a 3-ball of their own from junior guard
Alicia Cox (Vineland, N.J.). Brooklyn fought back and closed the deficit to 10 points with 11:58 to go, however, FDU-Florham used a 20-2 run to thwart any chance of a comeback.
Freshman guard
Danielle Leguillou (Staten Island, N.Y.) was a key contributor in the second half and scored nine of her 14 points in the second stanza, which helped the Devils stretch their lead to 28 points with 4:36 to play, before they finalized 22-point victory.
Campbell posted a double-double for the Bulldogs with 20 points and 11 rebounds in defeat.
In their next contest, the Devils return to Freedom Conference action when they host Eastern University (10-3, 2-0 Freedom) next Wednesday, January 14 with start time set for 6 p.m. at Ferguson Recreation Center.
