No. 1 FDU-Florham Notches its 50th Consecutive Win With 93-48 Rout of Wilkes

MADISON, N.J. – The No. 1 FDU-Florham women's basketball team won its 50th straight game by dominating the Wilkes University Lady Colonels 93-48 at the Ferguson Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Devils (17-0, 6-0 Freedom) have not lost since March 1, 2013, a 56-52 defeat in the NCAA Tournament to Widener University.

On Saturday, the nation's top-ranked team emphatically extended its streak, which is the longest active winning stretch in all of college basketball, by relying on their team-first attitude as nine different Devils scored, including four in double-figures.

Senior All-American Kyra Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) stole the show with a nearly perfect 9 for 10 shooting display, en route to a game-high 22 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Dayon's 22 points is the second largest output this season for the senior forward, who netted 23 back on November 25 against Baruch College.

Not be outdone, junior forward Shalette Brown's (Somerset, N.J.) rebounding prowess was on full display, as she corralled 13 rebounds, while tossing in 18 points and adding four blocks and four steals to her ledger. Brown has now amassed a double-double in back-to-back games and totaled five on the season.

Kyra Dayon and her sister Kara Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) started the afternoon with back-to-back 3-pointers, which gave FDU-Florham a 6-0 lead out of the gate. The Devils' frenetic pace continued throughout the stanza and they turned a seven-point lead with 3:36 to go, into a 16-point cushion (42-26) by intermission.

Sophomore point guard Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J.) led the team with 10 points in the first half, while Brown was well on her way to the double-double with seven points and nine rebounds at the break.

Wilkes forward Chelsea Smelas topped the Lady Colonels with eight points and two rebounds, however, she was held scoreless in the second frame.

FDU-Florham immediately pushed their lead north of 20 points with a layup by Brown and trey by Kara Dayon to begin the second half.

The No. 1 Devils exploded on a 17-4 run, which extended their cushion to 59-30 at the 14:18 mark. Kyra Dayon knocked down all five of her attempts, including 3-for-3 from long range and the Devils scored 28 of the game's final 32 points to close out the contest.

FDU-Florham's swarming defense limited the Lady Colonels to just 29.8 percent shooting in the contest and six made baskets in the second period.

McDonough and freshman guard Danielle Leguillou (Staten Island, N.Y.) each knocked down a pair of treys in the win as the Devils connected on 10 shots from downtown.

In total, FDU-Florham matched its season-high shooting clip of 48.6 percent on 34-of-70 attempts, which previously occurred in their win at Kean University back in November.

For Wilkes, senior guard Elena Stambone finished with 10 points and five rebounds but connected on just 4-of-16 shots in the loss, while Emily Sofranko chipped in nine points for the Lady Colonels.

Next up for the Devils is a Freedom Conference road matchup with Manhattanville College (10-6, 1-4 Freedom) on Thursday, January29. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Kennedy Gym in Purchase, N.Y.
