MADISON, N.J. – Senior night at Robert T. Shields Field was one to remember after a late strike by senior
Kim Overland (Andover, N.J.) propelled the FDU-Florham women's soccer team to a 3-2 Freedom Conference victory over the Manhattanville College Valiants on Sunday night.
It was a wild first half that consisted of four goals on 14 shots between the two teams. Ten minutes into the game, the Devils struck first when
Mary Kate Whalen (Hazlet, N.J.) found the back of the net off of a free kick to give her team a 1-0 lead.
The Valiants did not back down and answered with a goal of their own in the 28th minute when
Christie DeMarco dribbled past two defenders and sent the ball past starting goalkeeper for the Devils,
Julia Perry (Newton, N.J.).
In the 33rd minute, sophomore
Gabby Diaco (Montville, N.J.) provided some flare for the Devils by sending a no look touch pass behind her back to a streaking
Brittni Calleo (Bayville, N.J.) who fired the ball into the net to help the Devils regain the lead.
However, it did not take long for the Valiants to answer again.
Dani Sullivan sent a soaring corner into the box and Tori Lettieri kicked the ball to the top of the net, evening the score up at 2-2.
Tied entering the second half, the Devils continued their attack in hopes to break through a tough Valiant goalkeeper,
Dolores Diemicke who finished the game with 10 saves.
Since it was a night to honor the seniors, it only seemed right that Overland broke the tie by netting the game winning goal in the 69th minute. Following Overland's goal, the Devils defense tightened up and did not allow the Valiants to take a single shot.
The Devils offense pressured the opposition all night and they outshot the Valiants 20 to six. Out of the Devils 20 shots, 13 were on goal. Perry recorded one save in the first half for the Devils and
Annie George (Denville, N.J.) closed the game out without seeing a shot sent her way.
With this win, the Devils move into a three-team tie for third place in the Freedom Conference standings.
