Devils Comeback Attempt Falls Short

Box Score Madison, N.J.  -- The FDU-Florham Devils women's soccer team put forth a valiant effort on Wednesday night at Robert T. Shields Field but came up short against a relentless Kean attack, ultimately falling 6-4.

The Cougars jumped on top with three straight goals in the first 17 minutes of play, temporarily stunning the previously unbeaten Devils.  Senior forward Claire Donohue alluded a Cougar defender and fired a high-ball over the keeper's head and into the back of the net to get FDU on the board.

Kean answered with another goal before Donohue struck again, launching her second goal of the game, this time from 20 yards out narrowing the Cougar lead to 4-2. Fellow senior Michelle Hickey then drove home a cross from Claudia Falconieri in the 47th minute to cut the Kean lead to just one.

After Kean tacked on one more, FDU defender Mary Kate Whalen launched the highlight goal of the match from 40 yards out to once again bring the Devils within a goal.

In the end, the Devils were unable to even the contest, which was put out of reach for good when Kean striker Angie Lopez netted the Cougar's sixth goal of the night equating to the 6-4 final.

The loss drops the Devils to 2-1 on the campaign while the Cougars improve to 2-1.

Next up for the Devils is a trip to Old Westbury, where they will take on the Panthers this Saturday, September 7th, with kickoff scheduled for 12 p.m.
