LEXINGTON, VA – Junior attack Will Keigler (Timonium, MD/Gilman) scored the game-winning goal with 0:09.9 left in overtime to give Washington & Lee a 6-5 win over the College at Florham Devils in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday evening.  The Generals will now move on to play Gettysburg on Saturday in the Second Round.

With the loss, the Devils end their season with a record of 13-5, the most wins in a season since 2001.

The Generals got on the board first as they notched a goal with 4:57 left in the first quarter.  FDU tied it at 1-1 just 1:03 later when sophomore attack Drew Canfield (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) converted a pass from senior midfielder Jason Koontz (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson).  Washington & Lee then jumped out to a 3-1 lead, scoring two goals in the final minute of the first quarter.  The majority of the second quarter went by without any scoring until the Generals made it 4-1 with 1:20 left in the half.  That’s when senior midfielder Peter Fleming (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) took over though, as he closed FDU’s halftime deficit to 4-2 when he scored off a pass from junior attack Will Stark (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) with 0:41 to go.

Fleming then recorded the only goal of the third quarter when he scored on the man-up after taking a feed from freshman midfielder Pat O’Brien (Flemington, NJ/Huntedon Central).  Fleming tied the game at 4-4 off a pass from Koontz with 9:19 left to play in regulation and Koontz gave the Devils their first lead of the game when he found the back of the net with 4:58 to go.  The Generals came right back though, getting the tying goal just 0:36 later with the help of a questionable penalty call that went against FDU giving W&L a two-man advantage.  Each team had chances to score the game-winner down the stretch and junior goalkeeper Alex Kajencki (Medford, MA/Xavierian) stepped up and made several huge saves to help get the game to overtime.
