DEVILS LOSE SEASON FINALE TO KING’S, 17-14

WILKES-BARRE, PA - Sophomore kicker Andrew DeRito (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) booted a 26-yard field goal with 0:18 remaining in regulation to give King’s a 17-14 win over the College at Florham Devils on Saturday afternoon at Betzler Field.

With the loss, the Devils finish the season with a record of 2-8 (0-7 MAC).

King’s took the opening kickoff and drove right down the field, going 67 yards in 14 plays to take a 7-0 lead on a three-yard touchdown run by freshman quarterback Olayinka Soda (Ocean Township, NJ/Ocean Twp.) with 6:49 left in the first quarter.

The Devils drove down to the Monarch 27-yard line with 0:39 left in the first quarter but the drive stalled and FDU lined up for a field goal.  The Monarchs got good penetration and blocked the field goal, gaining possession on their own 24-yard line.  The FDU defense forced a three-and-out and the Devils got the ball back on their own 38-yard line with 14:31 left in the first half.

On the first play of the drive senior running back Dan Harrison (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame) ripped off a 41-yard run to give FDU a first down on the King’s 21-yard line.  The Devils faced a third-and-one from the King’s one-yard line when Harrison plunged in to cut the Monarchs lead to 7-6 with 11:16 left in the second quarter.  The extra point hit the upright allowing King’s to keep the lead.  Harrison finished the game with 89 yards on 15 carries but had to leave the game early with an injury.

It didn’t take long for the Monarchs to respond though, as Soda found junior wide receiver Bob Cirko (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Bishop Hoban) for a 32-yard touchdown pass on the third play of the drive to give King’s a 14-6 lead with 9:42 remaining in the half.

After stalled drives by each squad, the Devils took possession on their own 22-yard line with 0:19 left in the half but the Devils just ran out the clock to go into the locker room down 14-6.

The Devils got the ball to open the second half but sophomore quarterback Bill Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick) was intercepted on the second play of the drive and King’s took over on their own 38-yard line.  The FDU defense forced a Monarch three-and-out and on the punt attempt, a bad snap allowed FDU to regain possession on the King’s 31-yard line.

Winters made up for his pick when he connected with sophomore wide receiver Kyle Bukowiec (Howell, NJ/Howell) on a 15-yard scoring strike to bring the Devils to within 14-12 with 10:03 left in the third quarter.  Winters then found senior tight end Ray Kwiatkowski (Morganville, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14.

Each offense had a three-and-out and King’s took over on their own 49-yard line with 5:35 remaining in the third.  Junior defensive end Rob Roberts (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) recorded a nine-yard sack on the first play to put the Monarchs in a hole.  A roughing the passer penalty on FDU on second down gave King’s an automatic first down on the FDU 45-yard line.  Soda drove the Monarchs down to the FDU 21-yard line on a combination of rushes and passes and on fourth down, King’s lined up for a 38-yard field goal but junior defensive tackle Kevin Hatcher-Puryear (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) got a hand up and blocked the attempt allowing the Devils to take over on their own 21-yard line with 14:40 left in the game.

Senior running back Adam LaValley (Newman, GA/Sparta, NJ) ripped off a 17-yard run on first down but the drive stalled and FDU had to punt.  On the Monarchs first play, Soda connected with Cirko on a 36-yard pass play all the way down to the FDU 30-yard line.  Soda then found freshman wide receiver Rick Ritter (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross) for a 12-yard gain down to the FDU 14-yard line on third-and-six to keep the drive alive.  The Monarchs faced another third down, this time third-and-11, when Roberts drilled Soda from behind for the sack to force fourth down and a decision for the Monarchs on whether to go for it or kick a field goal.  On fourth-and-twenty from the FDU 24-yard line, King’s went for it and Soda overthrew Ritter in the back of the end zone to give the Devils the ball back with 7:35 left in the game.

The Devils picked up a first down on a third-and-three from their own 42-yard line with 5:06 left in the game thanks to an illegal substitution penalty on King’s.  FDU picked up another third down conversion on the King’s 43-yard line on a one-yard run by LaValley with 3:58 left.  Facing a fourth-and-six from the King’s 39-yard line with 2:49 left in the game, the Devils elected to go for it and Winters was picked off by sophomore defensive back Justin Zlotek (Plymouth, VA/Wyoming Valley West) at the King’s 25-yard line.  Zlotek returned it to the King’s 49-yard line with 2:37 left to play.

On the first play, Soda found Ritter for a 17-yard gain down to the FDU 34-yard line.  Soda then scrambled for 13 yards and a first down to the FDU 22-yard line with 1:45 remaining.  Soda then ran for nine yards down to the FDU 13-yard line on first down, and picked up another first down on the next play with a three-yard scramble.  On third-and-nine from the FDU 11-yard line with 0:23 left in the game, King’s chose to go for the field goal and sophomore kicker Andrew DeRito (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) knocked in a 26-yarder to give the Monarchs a 17-14 lead with 0:18 remaining.

FDU got the ball out to midfield with 0:01 remaining on two Winters completions, but a hail mary attempt fell way short and King’s earned their first victory of the season.

Winters finished the game 12-of-26 for 118 yards to go along with a touchdown and two interceptions.  LaValley had 16 carries for 65 yards while Kwiatkowski had five catches for 57 yards.  Bukowiec finished with four grabs for 43 yards and a score.  Defensively for the Devils, junior linebacker Jason Stopper (Richmond, VA/North Plainfield, NJ) had a team-high nine tackles, one for loss.  Roberts finished with four tackles, 2.5 for loss, and two sacks.  Senior safety Joe DeSalle (Linwood, NJ/Mainland Regional) had seven stops while Hatcher-Puryear and senior free safety Derek Gregory (Stratford, NJ/Bishop Eustace) each had six tackles.

For King’s, Soda went 8-of-21 for 127 yards and a touchdown while also carrying 20 times for 90 yards and another score.  Ritter had four catches for 55 yards and Cirko had two grabs for 68 yards and a touchdown.  Senior linebacker Tore Alaimo (Pittston Twp., PA/Pittston Area) had a game-high 13 tackles.

LATE RALLY FALL SHORTS AS FDU IS KNOCKED OFF BY LEBANON VALLEY, 27-24

MADISON, NJ - Sophomore running back Charlie Parker (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) had 122 yards on 28 carries and two touchdowns as Lebanon Valley held off a late College at Florham rally to beat the Devils, 27-24, on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 2-7 on the season (0-6 MAC).

FDU got on the board first, taking a 3-0 lead on a 33-yard field goal from junior kicker Michael Barnard (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) with 6:24 left to play in the first quarter.  The field goal capped a 14 play, 61 yard drive for the Devils that saw the big play come on a 27-yard completion from sophomore quarterback Bill Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick) to senior tight end Ray Kwiatkowski (Morganville, NJ/Monsignor Donovan).  The pair also hooked up for a 16-yard connection during the drive.

The score stayed that way until there was 10:54 left in the first half when sophomore quarterback Patrick Weiss (Gilbertsville, PA/St. Pius X) tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Adam Brossman (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon).  Earlier in the drive, Weiss found Brossman for a 38-yard completion.  Brossman finished the game with seven catches for 100 yards and the touchdown.

After a failed drive by each team, FDU took possession of the ball at their own 27-yard line with 2:04 left in the half.  Winters proceeded to march the Devils down the field, rushing for 23 yards and completing five passes for 39 yards to set FDU up for a 28-yard field goal by Barnard as time expired.  The Devils went into the locker room trailing the Flying Dutchmen by a score of 7-6.

The Devils got the ball to start the second half and drove 60 yards in seven plays to take a 14-7 lead on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Winters to Kwiatkowski.  The two also connected on the two-point conversion to put FDU up by seven.  Senior running back Dan Harrison (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame) carried five times for 26 yards on the drive.

Lebanon Valley came right back on the ensuing possession though, going 65 yards on 11 plays and cutting the FDU lead to 14-13 on a one-yard touchdown plunge by Parker on fourth-and-goal with 6:06 left in the third quarter.  Junior defensive tackle Kevin Hatcher-Puryear (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) blocked the extra point to keep the lead for FDU.  The big play on the drive came on a third-and-thirteen from the FDU 33 yard line, Weiss found sophomore wide receiver Matt Donley (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) for a 26-yard gain.

FDU increased their lead on the first possession of the fourth quarter to 17-13 on a 33-yard field goal by Barnard.  Kwiatkowski came through once again for the Devils on a third down for the Devils as he hauled in a 19-yard completion from Winters to keep the drive alive.  Senior running back Adam LaValley (Newman, GA/Sparta, NJ) had eight carries for 48 hard earned yards on the possession.

The Flying Dutchmen scored on their next drive thanks to a very questionable personal foul call on FDU that gave Lebanon Valley a first down on a third-and-ten.  After the penalty, Weiss found Donley for a 37-yard scoring strike that put the Dutchmen ahead by a score of 20-17 with 9:18 left in the game.  Weiss finished the game 11-of-23 for 173 yards and touchdowns.

After the FDU defense forced a three-and-out with 6:07 remaining, Lebanon Valley punted it away but it was muffed by the Devils and the Dutchmen recovered on the FDU 40.  Parker ran the ball four times for 40 yards on the drive and on the fourth carry he found pay dirt from two yards out to give Lebanon Valley a 27-17 advantage with 4:23 left in the game.

Winters was intercepted on the next drive but the Devil defense forced a three-and-out and the offense got the ball back on the Dutchmen 30 yard line with 1:26 on the clock.  On second-and-goal from the five, Winters was intercepted in the end zone but Kwiatkowski forced a fumble and fell on it for a Devil touchdown that cut the lead to 27-24 with 0:31 remaining.  The comeback was cut short however; as the Lebanon Valley recovered the onside kick and took a knee to end the game.

For the Devils, Winters was 19-of-32 for 193 yard to go along with a touchdown and two interceptions while rushing for 51 yards on 16 carries.  Kwiatkowski had six catches for a career-high 97 yards and a score.  Harrison finished with 51 yards on 17 carries and junior wide receiver Rob Eck (Macungie, Emmaus) had six catches for 35 yards.

Defensively, senior linebacker Jon Sacco (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) had a game-high 10 tackles, two for loss.  Senior linebacker Mike McGowan (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and senior defensive end Tom Capra (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) each had seven tackles.

ROSA RUNS LYCOMING PAST FDU, 26-14

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - Sophomore running back Mark Rosa (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) carried 29 times for 160 yards and two touchdowns to lead Lycoming to a 26-14 win over the College at Florham Devils on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 2-6 on the season (0-5 MAC)

Lycoming forced an FDU three-and-out on the opening possession of the game and got the ball on the Devils 42-yard line after a bad punt.  The Warriors took the ball 42 yards on nine plays to take a 6-0 lead on a 16-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Tim Hook (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) to sophomore wide receiver Brad Shellenberger (Lock Haven, PA/Central Mountain) with 9:16 remaining in the first quarter.  The extra point was no good.

The Warriors regained possession on their own 45-yard line with 6:09 left in the first quarter.  Lycoming marched 55 yards on 13 plays to go up 12-0 on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Hook to senior tight end Bill Margetich (Glenolden, PA/Interboro).  The two-point conversion was no good.  On a third-and-fifteen earlier in the drive, Hook scrambled for 16 yards and a first down.  He then found Shellenberger for five yards on a fourth-and two from the FDU 23-yard line to keep the drive alive again.

The Devils had their best drive of the day thus far after the defense forced Lycoming to turn to ball over on downs at the FDU 41-yard line with 5:35 remaining in the first half.  Sophomore quarterback Bill Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick) found junior wide receiver Rob Eck (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) for a 13-yard gain on third-and-twelve but three plays later, the Devils had to punt and Lycoming took over on their own 20-yard line.

After two three-and-outs by both teams, the half ended with the Devils trailing Lycoming by a score of 12-0.

Lycoming started with the ball at the beginning of the second half but FDU forced a three-and-out and took over on their own 41-yard line after a shanked Lycoming punt.  The Devils drove all the way down to the Warrior 29-yard line but Winters was intercepted a play after FDU dropped a sure touchdown pass that would have cut the lead in half.

The Warriors took over after the pick on their own 35-yard line with 10:00 left in the third quarter.  After getting a first down on their first play, the Warriors next three plays went for no gain and Shellenberger lined up to punt.  It was a fake however, and he ran it all the way down to the FDU 21-yard line for a 30-yard gain.  Six plays later on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line, took it in to give the Warriors an 18-0 lead with 4:49 left in the third quarter.  Hook connected with Shellenberger on the two-point conversion to put Lycoming ahead 20-0.

FDU took the ensuing kickoff and drove 66 yards in 13 plays taking 6:19 off the clock and cutting the Lycoming lead to 20-7 with 13:25 left in the game on a one-yard touchdown run by senior running back Dan Harrison (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame).  The Devils were aided by several solid runs by Winters on the drive.

Lycoming took over on their own 34-yard line but three plays later, senior linebacker Jon Sacco (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) picked off Hook and FDU got the ball on the Warriors 48-yard line with 11:15 remaining in the game.  The Devils proceeded to go 48 yards on eight plays to cut the lead to 20-14 on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Winters to Eck with 8:14 remaining in the game. Eck had three catches for 36 yards on the drive.

The Warriors responded right away when they took possession on their own 46-yard line and on the first play freshman wide receiver Ryan Wagaman (Aspers, PA/Biglerville) took a reverse down to the FDU 23-yard line for a gain of 31 yards.  Three plays later, Rosa took it in from five yards out to increase the Warrior lead to 26-14 with 6:57 left in the game.  The two-point conversion attempt was no good.

FDU got a great kickoff return out to their own 45-yard line by junior running back Dale Arena (Bloomingdale, NJ/Butler) to start their next drive.  On third-and-fourteen from the 41-yard line, Winters found sophomore wide receiver Kyle Bukowiec (Howell, NJ/Howell) for a 37-yard gain down to the Lycoming 22-yard line.  On fourth down and four yards to go from the Warrior 16-yard line, Winters was tackled for a gain of only one and Lycoming took over on downs with 4:22 left in the game.

On their first play, Rosa carried the ball for a 43-yard gain down to the Devils 42-yard line.  After Rosa ran the Warriors down to the 12-yard line, Lycoming took a knee and ran out the clock to secure the victory.

Hook finished the game 16-of-29 for 147 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while also rushing nine times for 48 yards.  Shellenberger had five catches for 41 yards and a score.

For FDU, Winter was 14-of-27 for 158 yards to go along with one touchdown and one pick.  He also ran 19 times for 34 yards.  Eck had four grabs for 50 yards and a touchdown.  On defense, junior linebacker Ryan Lenihan (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) had a team-high nine tackles while junior linebacker Logan Orros (Somerset, NJ/Bishop Ahr) finished with eight tackles.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, November 3, 2007, at home against Lebanon Valley for Senior Day beginning at 1 pm.

FALKENSTEIN LEADS WIDENER TO 23-3 WIN OVER FDU

MADISON, NJ - Senior wide receiver Mike Falkenstein (Newark, DE/St. Mark’s) had 11 catches for 177 yards and a touchdown to lead Widener past the College at Florham Devils, 23-3, on Friday night in the first game under the new lights at Robert T. Shields Field.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 2-5 (0-4 MAC).

FDU got on the board first thanks to a 20-yard field goal by junior kicker Michael Barnard (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) with 14:58 left in the second quarter.  The kick capped a 14 play 73 yard drive by the Devils that ate up 5:39.  The big plays on the drive were a 25-yard run by sophomore quarterback Bill Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick) and a 14-yard completion from Winters to junior wide receiver Rob Eck (Macungie, PA/Emmaus).  Eck finished the game with eight catches for 64 yards, both career-highs.

The Pride answered with a field goal of their own on their next possession, a 26-yard try from senior kicker Tom Laurich (Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood) with 12:52 left to play in the first half.  Falkenstein had 40 yards receiving during the drive.

FDU’s next drive ended with a punt and Widener got the ball back with 9:57 left in the half on their own 43-yard line.  Senior quarterback Matt Campbell (Broomall, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) went 3-of-5 for 68 yards on the drive, connecting with Falkenstein on a 21-yard scoring strike to give the Pride a 10-3 lead with 7:08 remaining in the half.  Campbell ended the night 20-of-34 for 267 yards and the touchdown.

The Devils had a good drive going on their next possession, with Eck catching two passes for 17 yards, before turning it over on downs on the Widener 24-yard line with 2:40 left.  The Pride used short passes to drive down to the FDU 17-yard line where Laurich booted a 33-yard field goal to give the Pride a 13-3 lead going into the intermission.

Widener got the ball to start the second half and drove 48 yards on seven plays to take a 16-3 lead on a Laurich field goal from 22 yards out.  Falkenstein had two catches for 27 yards while sophomore fullback Ian Decker (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) had three carries for 23 yards.

FDU went three-and-out on the ensuing drive and Widener took over with great field position on the FDU 44-yard line.  After a 15-yard catch by Falkenstein, the Pride used a pass interference penalty on FDU to get the ball on the Devil 14-yard line.  Two plays later, Decker punched it in from one yard out to give Widener a 23-3 lead with 7:43 left in the third quarter.

The Devils threatened at the beginning of the fourth quarter, driving down to the Widener 25-yard line before Winters was intercepted by junior safety Zach Smith (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown).  The FDU defense held the rest of the way, forcing three Pride punts while senior linebacker Jon Sacco (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) recovered a fumble but the offense could not sustain any drives and the Pride earned the 23-3 win.

Winters went 23-of-40 for 166 yards in three interceptions while senior running back Dan Harrison (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame) had 16 carries for 42 yards.  Five Devils had three or more catches in the game led by Eck.  Senior defensive end Tom Capra (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) had a team-high eight tackles while Sacco finished with five tackles and the fumble recovery.

ISGRO’S BIG DAY GIVES DELAWARE VALLEY A 42-14 WIN OVER FDU

DOYLESTOWN, PA - Sophomore quarterback Mike Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) went 18-of-24 for 239 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 39 yards and a touchdown to lead Delaware Valley to a 42-14 win over the College at Florham Devils.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 2-4 (0-3 MAC) on the season.

Delaware Valley took the opening kickoff and drove all the way down to the FDU seven-yard line, lining up for a 23-yard field goal on fourth down.  Junior defensive tackle Kevin Hatcher-Puryear (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) thwarted the Aggie scoring opportunity though by busting through the line and blocking the field goal attempt.

After forcing a Devil punt, the Aggies took over on their own 42-yard line and went 58 yards in four plays to take a 7-0 lead on a 13-yard touchdown run by Isgro with 2:26 left to play in the first quarter.  The big play in the drive came on a 26-yard run by senior running back Jake Sheffield (Glenolden, PA/Interboro).

The Aggies got the ball back with 14:47 left in the second quarter and proceeded to go 11 plays and 75 yards in 5:06 to take a 14-0 lead on a two-yard touchdown pass from Isgro to junior tight end Brad Emmons (Marlboro, NJ/Colts Neck).  Earlier in the drive, Isgro connected with freshman wide receiver Dan Heiland (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) for a 34-yard gain.

After an FDU three-and-out, Delaware Valley took over on their own 36-yard line with 8:02 left to play in the first half.  Two plays later, Isgro escaped a sack and found sophomore wide receiver Jimmy Smith (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) for a 59-yard scoring strike to give the Aggies a 21-0 lead with 7:13 left in the half.

Delaware Valley forced another FDU three-and-out and got the ball back on the Devil 49-yard line but could not gain a first down.  On fourth down, the Aggies faked a punt but the Devils held and took over on their own 43-yard line.  On the first play of the drive, senior safety Quincy Thaxton (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) sacked FDU sophomore quarterback Bill Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick) and forced a fumble that the Aggies recovered on the FDU 31-yard line.  Five plays later, Sheffield punched it in from two yards out to give Delaware Valley a 28-0 lead with 1:56 remaining in the half.  Sheffield finished the game with 10 carries for 70 yards.

The Devils had to punt the ball back to the Aggies again with 1:16 left in the first half.  A short punt gave Delaware Valley the ball on the FDU 42-yard line.  Isgro drilled a touchdown pass down the middle to Heiland on the first play to put the Aggies ahead by a score of 35-0 going into the intermission.  Heiland had four catches for 100 yards on the day.

FDU got the ball to start the second half but could not pick up a first down and had to punt.  Delaware Valley took over on their own 35-yard line and marched 65 yards in nine plays to take a 42-0 lead on a six-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Matt Cook (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) with 8:46 left in the third quarter.

With 2:45 left in the third quarter, the Devils forced a punt by Delaware Valley and started on the Aggies 32-yard line, their best starting field position of the day.  Twelve plays later, Winters found senior tight end Ray Kwiatkowski (Morganville, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) for seven yards and a touchdown to put the Devils on the board.  Delaware Valley still led however, 42-7, with 12:44 remaining in the game.

The Devils scored again with 3:42 left in the game on a 15-yard scoring strike from Winters to sophomore wide receiver Kyle Bukowiec (Howell, NJ/Howell) to cut the Aggie lead to 42-14.  The pass capped an eight play, 51 yard drive for FDU.

For the Devils, Winters finished 15-of-29 for 148 yards and two touchdowns to go along with an interception.  Bukowiec had six catches for 76 yards and a score, all career-highs.  Senior linebacker Jon Sacco (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) had a game-high nine tackles.

KARAFFA LEADS WILKES TO 47-0 VICTORY OVER FDU

EDWARDSVILLE, PA - Senior quarterback Al Karaffa (Scranton, PA/Scranton) had two touchdowns on the ground and one through the air to lead Wilkes to a 47-0 win over the College at Florham Devils.  Karaffa finished 15-of-23 for 256 yards.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 2-3 (0-2 MAC) on the season.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Devils fumbled on their own 15-yard line on the first play of the second quarter and Wilkes took over with a short field.  Two plays later, freshman running back Jamar Beverly (South Plainfield, NJ/Kent, CT) ran it in from seven yards out.  The Colonels missed the extra point to take a 6-0 lead.

FDU went three-and-out on their next possession and punted the ball back to Wilkes.  The Colonels then marched 51 yards on 10 plays capped by a five-yard touchdown run by Karaffa.  Wilkes made the extra point to take a 13-0 lead with 8:45 left in the first half.

Wilkes got the ball back with 3:09 left in the second quarter and went 80 yards on 11 plays in 2:29 to take a 20-0 lead on a Karaffa one-yard touchdown run.  The big play in the drive came on a 34-yard pass from Karaffa to junior wide receiver Jason Prushinski (Wapwallopen, PA/Crestwood).

The Colonels took the opening kickoff of the second half and on the second play, Wilkes ran a flea flicker and Karaffa hit Prushinski for a 60-yard touchdown to up their lead to 27-0 with 14:08 left in the third quarter.  Prushinski had four catches for 131 yards on the day.

With 5:17 left in the third quarter, Wilkes got the ball back thanks to an FDU punt.  The Colonels took six plays and went 59 yards in 2:22 to up their lead to 34-0 on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Karaffa to senior wide receiver Gil Flores (Scranton, PA/Scranton).

Wilkes took over again with 2:30 left in the third after recovering a Devil fumble on a bad snap.  The Devils had their best drive of the day to that point before the fumble on the Wilkes 35-yard line.  The Colonels took advantage though and drove 67 yards on eight plays to take a 41-0 lead on a 13-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Zach Latourette (Phillipsburg, NJ/Belvidere) with 14:29 left in the game.

The scoring was completed with 2:25 left in the game when freshman defensive back Ray Taylor (Paterson, NJ/Kent, CT) returned an interception for a 54-yard touchdown to put Wilkes up 47-0.  The extra point was once again missed.

For the Devils, senior wide receiver David Nemeth (Hamilton, NJ/Notre Dame) had four catches for 41 yards while senior free safety Derek Gregory (Stratford, NJ/West Deptford) had 11 tackles to lead the defense.

After a scoreless first quarter and 14:00 of the second quarter, Albright took a 7-0 lead on a 10-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Tanner Kelly (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) with 0:43 left before half.  The scramble capped an eight play, 64 yard drive that took 4:07.  The big play in the drive was a fake punt on a 4th-and-20 from the FDU 49-yard line where Kelly, who doubles as the Albright punter, completed a 30-yard pass to senior wide receiver Stephen Asay (Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro).  Asay finished with a game-high 10 catches for 139 yards.

Senior cornerback Michael Lotwich (Dumont, NJ/Dumont) returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards to put the Devils in business at the Albright 42-yard line with 0:33 left before intermission.  However on the first play of the drive, sophomore quarterback Bill Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick) was intercepted at the Lion 34-yard line.  Kelly then drove the Lions down to the FDU 16-yard line in three passes, two to Asay, where freshman kicker John Whelan (Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Regional) booted a 34-yard field goal as time expired to give Albright a 10-0 lead at halftime.

After two three-and-outs by the Devils to start the third quarter, Albright went 87 yards in five plays to take a 17-0 lead with 5:13 left in the third quarter on a two-yard touchdown pass from Kelly to sophomore fullback Kevin Zinzel (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove).  On the drive, Kelly was 4-of-4 for 85 yards and he finished the game 19-of-25 for 272 yards and a touchdown.

FDU got back into the game on their next possession, driving 70 yards on eight plays to cut the lead to 17-7 on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Winters to senior tight end Ray Kwiatkowski (Morganville, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) with 1:55 left in the third.  Junior running back Adam LaValley (Newman, GA/Sparta, NJ) accounted for 28 yards on the drive.

The Devils forced a three-and-out by the Lions to start the third quarter and started with the ball on their own three-yard line with 12:38 left in the game.  The Devils proceeded to drive 97 yards on 16 plays in 6:17 to pull to within 17-14 on a six-yard touchdown strike from Winters to Kwiatkowski with 6:21 left in the game.  The big play in the drive was a 28-yard pass from Winters to senior wide receiver David Nemeth (Hamilton, NJ/Notre Dame) on a third down at the FDU eight-yard line.

FDU forced another three-and-out on Albright’s next possession to get the ball back at their own 16-yard line with 4:18 remaining.  The Devils however, could not get a first down and gave the ball back to Albright after failing to convert a fourth down.  The FDU defense again held and forced a 32-yard field goal from Whelan that missed wide left.

Winters led the Devils to one first down on the drive but the Albright defense stiffened and forced a turnover on downs to end the game.

Senior defensive end Tom Capra (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) led the way on defense for the Devils, making eight tackles to go along with three sacks and a forced fumble.  Junior defensive tackle Don McCardell (Estell Manor, NJ/Buena) had six tackles and three sacks while junior defensive end Rob Roberts (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) had five tackles and two sacks.  Senior free safety Derek Gregory (Stratford, NJ/Bishop Eustace) tied for the game-high in tackles with nine.

Winters finished 14-of-30 for 155 yards to along with two touchdowns and one interception.  He also ran a game-high 16 times for 49 yards.  Kwiatkowski made four grabs for 82 yards and two touchdowns.

DEFENSE LEADS DEVILS TO 14-13 WIN OVER WILLIAM PATERSON

WAYNE, NJ - The College at Florham Devils defense held William Paterson to only 80 yards rushing and forced three turnovers in a 14-13 win over the Pioneers on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Devils improved to 2-1 on the season.

With 1:30 left in the first quarter, senior free safety Derek Gregory (Stratford, NJ/Bishop Eustace) intercepted a pass at the Pioneer 42-yard line.  The Devils proceeded to go 42 yards in six plays and scored on a 19-yard touchdown run by senior running back Dan Harrison (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame) to take a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, senior wide receiver Kareen Moon (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner) ripped off an 82-yard return to tie the game at 7-7 with 13:43 left in the first half.

After no serious threats by either team, William Paterson blocked an FDU punt with 1:06 left in the half.  The Pioneers took over at the FDU 31-yard line but could only gain nine yards and had to settle for a 32-yard field goal by senior kicker Ricky Krautman (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) with 0:08 left in the half to take a 10-7 lead at intermission.

Neither team had a sustained drive to start the second half but the Devils got the ball back on the Pioneer 38-yard line with 4:50 left in the third quarter on a sack by junior defensive end Rob Roberts (Somerset, NJ/Franklin), which caused a fumble that was recovered by junior linebacker Vinny Russo (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearly).  On the very first play of the drive, sophomore quarterback Bill Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick) connected with junior wide receiver Rob Eck (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) on a 38-yard scoring strike to give the Devils a 14-10 lead.

The Pioneers took over on their own 28-yard line after and FDU three-and-out and drove 53 yards on eight plays in 2:44 but had to settle for a Krautman 37-yard field goal with 13:06 left in the game to cut the Devils lead to 14-13.

The Devils again went three-and-out and William Paterson took over on their own 15-yard line with 12:00 left in the fourth quarter.  The Pioneers drove to the Devil 45-yard line but FDU got a huge stop on a fourth-and-one quarterback sneak to get the ball back with 8:28 left in the game.

This time it was FDU’s turn to try a fourth-and-one quarterback sneak at the Pioneer 45-yard line and Winters got it to give the Devils a new set of downs with 5:40 remaining.  The Devils drove the ball all the way down to the William Paterson 12-yard line and on third down, Winters was intercepted on the four-yard line to give the Pioneers the ball back with 3:00 left.

As it did all day long, the Devils defense once again came up big.  On fourth down from the William Paterson 30-yard line, sophomore defensive tackle Nick Cusanelli (Brick, NJ/Brick) recorded a sack to give FDU the ball back and end the game.

Harrison finished the game with 70 yards on 19 carries while Winters added another 28 yards on the ground.  Russo led the way on defense with 13 tackles, 2.5 for loss, and a fumble recovery.  Roberts added seven tackles, 2.5 for loss, while junior defensive lineman Don McCardell (Estell Manor, NJ/Buena) had seven tackles and a sack.

LIONS RUN WILD IN 53-7 WIN OVER FDU

EWING, NJ - The College of New Jersey rushed 62 times for 424 yards and senior running back Dan Dornacker (Jersey City, NJ/Brick Township) had 107 of those yards as TCNJ beat the College at Florham Devils, 53-7, on Friday evening.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 1-1 on the season.  The 53 points given up were the most since a 53-12 loss to Wilkes in 2004.

After an FDU three-and-out to start the game, TCNJ marched 74 yards on 12 plays to go up 6-0 on a six-yard touchdown run by Dornacker.  The Devils blocked the extra point but during the drive, 63 of the 74 yards gained by the Lions were on the ground.

The Devils picked up a first down on their next drive but stalled at midfield and had to punt.  The Lions then took the ball 82 yards on 11 plays in 5:39 and scored on a 16-yard run by sophomore running back Walter Kumka (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) to take a 12-0 lead with 1:26 left in the first quarter.  FDU again blocked the extra point but once again TCNJ gained all but 11 yards in the drive on the ground.

The Devils had their best drive of the game to begin the second quarter but stalled on the TCNJ 31-yard line and turned the ball over on downs.  Two plays into the TCNJ drive though, junior linebacker Vinny Russo (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearly) picked off a pass by TCNJ sophomore quarterback Chris James (Brick, NJ/Brick) to give the Devils the ball back on the Lion 31-yard line.  Junior running back Dale Arena (Bloomingdale, NJ/Butler) started the drive with an 11-yard run and two plays later, sophomore quarterback Bill Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick) scrambled and found senior tight end Ray Kwiatkowski (Morganville, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) on a 20-yard scoring strike to cut the TCNJ lead to 12-7.  Kwiatkowski carried four Lion tacklers the final five yards in order to get FDU on the board.

With 6:00 to go in the second quarter, FDU got the ball on their own four-yard line and went three-and-out.  TCNJ returned the punt to the FDU 26-yard line and after losing four yards on their first three plays, they faced a 4th and 14 from the 30-yard line.   The Lions elected to go for it and they converted on a 21-yard pass play down to the FDU nine-yard line.  Two plays later, James found sophomore wide receiver Austin Misiura (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) on a seven-yard touchdown strike to give TCNJ a 19-7 lead with 3:41 left in the second quarter.

The Lions got the ball back with 1:55 left in the half and drove 58 yards on seven plays that took 1:04 off the clock and culminated in a 29-yard touchdown run by James to put TCNJ up 26-7 going in to intermission.

TCNJ had the ball to start the second half and it looked as if the Devils would hold them to a three-and-out but a fake punt kept the Lion drive alive.  Ten plays later, Dornacker scored from 14 yards out to cap a 13 play, 67 yard drive and put TCNJ ahead by a score of 33-7.

The Lions forced a fumble on FDU’s next possession and recovered on the Devil 28-yard line.  It only took two plays for TCNJ to convert as James connected with sophomore running back Lee Jones (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) on a 28-yard catch-and-run.  The Devils once again blocked the extra point but TCNJ led 39-7.

The Devils went three-and-out on their next possession and TCNJ took over at the FDU 43-yard line.  Three plays later, sophomore quarterback Bill Picatagi (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West) took it in from seven yards out to give the Lions a 46-7 lead with 5:18 left in the third quarter.

FDU had a promising drive on the ensuing possession but Winters was intercepted on the TCNJ 28-yard line.  The Lions then drove 72 yards on eight plays, capped by a 26-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Chase Misiura (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) to put the Lions up 53-7 with 14:23 remaining in the game.

For the Devils, Winters was 9-of-22 for 76 yards with a touchdown and an interception.  Senior defensive end Tom Capra (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) recorded eight tackles, one for loss.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, September 22, 2007, at William Paterson beginning at 1 pm.

MADISON, NJ - Junior kicker Michael Barnard (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) booted a 20-yard field goal with 0:15 left in regulation to tie the game and then he went on to kick a 43-yarder in overtime to give the College at Florham Devils a 20-17 win over Juniata on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Devils are 1-0 for the first time since the 2004 season and only the second time since 1996.

The Devils took the opening kickoff and marched 56 yards in six plays to open up a 7-0 lead thanks to a 16-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Bill Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick).  Winters also had a 20-yard run during the drive.

FDU upped their lead to 14-0 with 5:03 left in the first quarter on a 23-yard touchdown strike from Winters to senior tight end Ray Kwiatkowski (Morganville, NJ/Monsignor Donovan).  The scoring strike was set up in part due to a 17-yard Winters run.

The score stayed the same until 5:11 left in the third quarter when freshman running back Kyle McKechnie (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) scored from two yards out to cut the deficit to 14-7.  The Eagles were aided by a 17-yard completion from junior quarterback Jay Leonard (Newville, PA/Big Spring) to senior wide receiver Chad Steiner (Frederick, MD/Frederick) and a pass interference penalty by FDU.

Juniata cut the lead to 14-10 with 10:45 remaining in the game on a 33-yard field goal by freshman kicker Davis Smith (Lemont, PA/State College).  The big play in the drive was a 38-yard pass from Leonard to senior wide receiver Lance Tippett (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and another FDU pass interference penalty.

After a three-and-out by the Devils that saw the Eagles get the ball back on FDU’s 31 yard line, Leonard connected with Tippett on the first play to give Juniata their first lead of the day, 17-14, with 9:14 left in the game.

After each team had a stalled drive, the Devils got the ball back with 5:49 remaining and proceeded to march 72 yards in 15 plays to set up Barnard’s game-tying field goal.  During the drive, Winters had a 10-yard run and completed a swing pass to senior running back Dan Harrison (Trenton, NJ/Notre Dame) for 10 yards.  Harrison also had a 10-yard run in the drive but the big play came from junior running back Adam LaValley (Newman, GA/Sparta, NJ), who broke off a 22-yard run to get the ball down to the Juniata nine yard line.

FDU won the toss in overtime and elected to play defense, giving Juniata the ball first.  After three Leonard incomplete passes, Smith missed a 42-yard field goal wide left to give the Devils the ball.  FDU ended up losing three yards on their drive but Barnard came on and drilled a 43-yarder to give his team the win.

Winters finished with 14 rushes for 89 yards and a score while going 5-for-18 with a touchdown in the air.  Harrison carried the ball 22 times for 96 and Kwiatkowski caught two passes for 38 yards and a score.
