FDU-FLORHAM SOFTBALL  ELIMINATED BY LYCOMING, 1-0

Lycoming Scores Only Run of Game in Bottom of the 7th

EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The College at Florham Devils were eliminated by the Lycoming Warriors in the Devils’ second game of the day, as Lycoming scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 1-0 win and advance to play King’s for the Freedom Conference Championship and the automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.

After a scoreless six innings, the Devils opened the seventh with a single by freshman pitcher Julie Hartnett (Riverton, NJ). Missy Somers pinch ran for Hartnett and then stole second base, but her hand came off the bag as she slid past, and she was tagged and called out.    

In the bottom of the frame, Marianne Simpson led off with a single. Chris Caroselli put down a sacrifice bunt, but the ball was thrown into centerfield, leaving runners on first and second with no one out.

Jana Reitz then hit a fly ball right down the left field line. It was dropped, allowing Simpson to score the game-winning run.

For the game, junior shortstop Jess Cunningham (Roselle, NJ) went 1-for-1, freshman catcher Kelly Nover (Lindenhurst, NY) went 1-for-3, and Hartnett went 1-for-3.

Hartnett took the loss for the Devils. She went 6.0 innings and faced three batters in the seventh. Hartnett allowed one run, unearned, on eight hits. She struck out two and walked no one.

For Lycoming, Morgan Mantle earned the win. She went seven innings, holding the Devils to just three hits. Mantle struck out five and walked one.

At the plate for Lycoming, Sarah Longino went 2-for-3. Reitz went 2-for-4.

There were no extra-base hits in the game.

The Devils are eligible for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Metro Region Tournament. The selection will take place on Monday.

FDU-FLORHAM SOFTBALL  ADVANCES, BEATS WILKES 6-1

 Devils Hit Three Homers, Play Lycoming at 11 am

Edwardsville, PA -- EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The College at Florham Devils beat Wilkes in the losers’ bracket of the Freedom Conference Tournament to advance to play Lycoming at 11 am. FDU was beaten by Lycoming in game one yesterday in this double-elimination tournament.

The Devils got their first run of the day when junior shortstop Jess Cunningham (Roselle, NJ) homered to lead off the third inning, putting FDU up 1-0.

A two-run homer by freshman Colleen Cyriax (South Amboy, NJ) in the fourth inning gave the Devils a 3-0 advantage. In the fifth inning, the Devils extended their lead to 4-0 when freshman pitcher Katelyn Smith (Temecula, CA) drove in freshman catcher Kelly Nover (Lindenhurst, NY) with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Devils got their final two runs in the seventh inning. Nover hit a solo homer with one out to put FDU up 6-0.

Alexis Petite hit a solo homer to center in the bottom of the seventh for Wilkes’ only run of the game. Wilkes had runners on first and third with two outs, but Smith struck out Wilkes pinch-hitter Alex Ingram to end the game.

Nover went 3-for-4 with a homer, a stolen base, and two runs scored. She is hitting .368 on the year. Kristen Loriot (Howell, NJ) went 3-for-4, with a double. Amanda Morrison (Hillsborough, NJ) went 1-for-4 for FDU and is now batting .362. Her single gave her 42 hits on the season, tying her for fifth place on FDU’s single season hits list.

Freshman third baseman Tara Hulse (Brick, NJ) went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Smith earned the win, going seven innings. She allowed five hits and one run (earned). She struck out 10 and walked no one.

Laurie Agresti took the loss for Wilkes, throwing a complete game. She gave up 12 hits and six runs (five earned). She struck out six and walked one.

SOFTBALL EDGED BY LYCOMING, 1-0 IN FIRST ROUND:
DEVILS TO PLAY WILKES AT 9 AM SATURDAY

Edwardsville, PA – The fourth-seeded Devils were edged out by the top-seeded Lycoming Warriors 1-0 in the opening game of the Freedom Conference Tournament hosted by Wilkes University at the Ralston Complex. FDU will face Wilkes at 9:00 am. Wilkes was beaten by King’s.

The only run of the game came in the fourth inning. Amy Curry led off with a single for Lycoming. After a pop-out, Betsy Reese reached first on a throwing error. Curry moved to third and Reese went to second on the play. FDU pitcher Katelyn Smith was able to strike out Morgan Mantle for the second out, but after a walk to load the bases, Marianne Simpson singled to left field to knock in the run.

FDU managed just two hits, a single by Amanda Morrison in the fourth and a single by Smith in the fifth.

Smith (10-7) went the distance, allowing five hits. She struck out four and walked one.

Mantle (9-3) earned the win for Lycoming, allowing just two hits in seven innings. She struck out eight and walked three.

 

BASEBALL EDGED BY DeSALES, 7-6 ON 8TH INNING HOMER:

CALISTRI GRAND SLAM TIES GAME, BUT DEVILS LOSE AND WILL FACE WILKES TOMORROW AT 11 AM


QUAKERTOWN, PA   Things did not look so good for the fourth-seeded Devils as they trailed the top-seeded DeSales Bulldogs 6-0 through six innings in the first game of the Freedom Conference Playoffs at Memorial Park, but that all changed in the eighth inning.

The Devils chipped away with a run in the seventh, and then managed another in the eighth. But with two outs and the bases loaded, Thomas Calistri hit a grand slam over the left field wall to tie the game 6-6.

DeSales dashed the Devils’ hopes in the bottom of the eighth, however, when Kyle Peters hit a solo homer to left field to give the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead.

DeSales held on to win by that score, improving to 29-8 and advancing in the winner’s bracket. FDU drops to 22-13 and will play Wilkes  tomorrow at 11 am in the losers’ bracket.  Wilkes was beaten 8-0 by King’s. in the 7:30 pm game.

For FDU, Calistri went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Jim DaSilva went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Matt Reppert (7-2) earned the complete-game win. He struck out 11 and walked two while scattering seven hits. He allowed six runs (one earned).

For FDU, Chris Voigtsberger took the loss, going the distance. He allowed seven runs (four earned) on 12 hits. He struck out 2 and walked four.
