STRONG PITCHING LEADS DEVILS TO SWEEP OF SCRANTON, 9-1 AND 9-2

SCRANTON, PA - Behind solid pitching performances by sophomores Ryan Flannery (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton) and Glenn Regan (Bayonne, N.J./St. Peter’s Prep), FDU-Florham swept The University of Scranton in a Freedom Conference doubleheader at Connell Park Saturday afternoon.

Flannery went the distance in the opener by striking out eight and not allowing an earned run as the Devils went on to post a 9-1 victory.  Regan allowed just five hits and only one earned run as FDU-Florham took the nightcap, 9-2.  With the wins, FDU-Florham improved to 15-12 overall and 9-3 in the conference, while the Royals fell to 8-15 and 3-7.

After Scranton took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in the first game, the Devils put three runs on the scoreboard with two out in the top of the fourth inning.  Senior catcher Joe Franzese (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) started the rally with a double and scored on a single by freshman Joey Santillo (Budd Lake, N.J./Mt. Olive), who finished with two hits and two rbi’s.  The Royals committed two costly errors during the frame to put Santillo and junior Lucas Cittone (Highland Park, N.J./Highland Park) in scoring position.  Cittone drove in Santillo with a single and later scored on a single by freshman Charles Kull (Livingston, N.J./Livingston).

Santillo and Franzese delivered big hits again in the fifth inning.  Santillo hit his second home run of the season and Franzese drove in another run with a double to chase Royal starting pitcher Kevin McGrath (Brooklyn, N.Y./Cathedral Preparatory), who went 4 2/3 innings and struck out four.  Kull and Cittone hit home runs in the sixth and seventh inning, respectively, to break the game open.  Flannery ended a potential Royal rally in the third inning when he struck out two batters after Scranton had runners on second and third-base with only one out.

Junior Jason Feairheller (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) had two of Scranton’s five hits off Flannery and junior Mike Graziano (Hamilton, N.J./Notre Dame) belted his fourth double of the season.

Cittone opened the second game by belting a home run to right center field to spark the Devils to an early 2-0 lead.  FDU-Florham extended the lead to 4-0 in the second inning, when freshman Bill Smith (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) doubled and scored on an error.  Senior Jim DaSilva (Morristown, N.J./Ridge), who reached on an error, later scored on a rbi single by sophomore Dan Bellino (Jackson, NJ/St. Rose).  Cittone sparked another rally in the sixth inning with a double and scored on a single by Smith.

Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Royals loaded the bases on back-to-back doubles by sophomore Andrew Outhouse (Croton Falls, N.Y/North Salem) and senior Nick Costanzo (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) and a walk by sophomore Kevin Johnson (Middletown, Pa./Middletown).  Regan then struck out the next two batters before giving up a walk to Feairheller to make the score 6-3.  Junior Greg Warger (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central) came on in relief and got a fly-out to end the inning.  Warger then set the Royals down in the seventh inning to earn his third save of the season after the Devils scored three runs in the top of the frame to set the final score.

NINE-RUN 8TH INNING LEADS STEVENS PAST FDU, 12-5

HOBOKEN, NJ - Junior pitcher/infielder Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa.) and senior outfielder Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J.) launched long home runs during a nine-run rally in the eighth inning as Stevens Institute of Technology overcame a two-run deficit late in the game en route to a 12-5 victory over FDU-Florham on Friday at Dobbelaar Baseball Field in Hoboken, N.J.  The win snapped a brief two-game losing streak for the Ducks as they improved to 21-6 on the year.

Leading 5-3 in the top of the eighth inning, the Devils (13-12) threatened to add to their lead as senior catcher/outfielder Joe Franzese (Staten Island, N.Y.) stroked a ground-rule double to left-center off sophomore pitcher Scott Picerno (Bayonne, N.J.).  With runners at second and third and no outs, Picerno got sophomore first baseman Dan Bellino (Jackson, N.J.) to hit a ground ball to Sandt at shortstop.  Sandt’s throw home was in plenty of time as sophomore catcher David Katusa (Somerset, N.J.) applied the tag to senior shortstop Jim DaSilva (Morristown, N.J.)

Following a foul out to junior pitcher/infielder Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J.) at third, Picerno escaped the inning unscathed as he induced freshman outfielder Charles Kull (Livingston, N.J.) to ground into a fielder’s choice where Bellino was forced out at second.

Junior pitcher Greg Warger (Ringoes, N.J.) came on in relief to start the bottom of the eighth and proceeded to hit Meehan with his first pitch.  Sandt, who had been held hitless in two straight games following a 30-game hit streak, launched a game-tying home run well beyond the fence in left-center.  With one out, sophomore infielder John Frustaci (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) singled up the middle.  Junior infielder Andrew Tesoriero (East Brunswick, N.J.) followed with a double to right-center as pinch runner Will Epperson (Southington, Conn.) advanced to third.

With the infield drawn in, junior pitcher/outfielder Eric McCormick (Edison, N.J.) hit a hard smash to the right of DaSilva.  After making a nice stop on the ball, DaSilva’s throw sailed over Bellino’s head at first for an error as Epperson raced home with what proved to be the winning run.  Tesoriero advanced to third on the throw.

After McCormick stole second, Katusa ripped a two-run single to center as Warger’s day came to an end after recording only one out.  Freshman catcher Dan Silva (Boonton Township, N.J.) lined a single to left to put runners at the corners.  Senior pitcher/outfielder Gerard Moreno (Bogota, N.J.) doubled to center as Katusa scored to push the lead to 9-5.

With runners at second and third and still only one out, Meehan launched a towering three-run home run to right-center to blow the game wide open.  Sandt followed with his second hit of the inning – a double – as the Ducks’ offense finally came alive.

The top three batters in the lineup for Stevens went 8-for-14 with three doubles, two home runs, two stolen bases, seven RBI and seven runs scored.  Moreno was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base.  Meehan had two hits, three RBI and three runs scored.  Sandt had a single, double, home run, stolen base, three RBI and two runs scored.  Frustaci finished with a pair of hits and an RBI.  Picerno improved to 4-0 on the year as he allowed three hits and one run over two innings.

Stevens raced out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Moreno led off with an infield single and Meehan hit a ground-rule double to left-center.  Sandt followed with an RBI single to center for the first run of the game.  The Ducks tacked on two more runs on back-to-back RBI groundouts by Birkenstock and Frustaci.

In the top of the fourth, FDU put together a two-out rally as sophomore first baseman/pitcher Tom Cifrodella (Old Bridge, N.J.) smoked a double to right field.  Following back-to-back walks, sophomore pitcher Armando Suarez (Long Valley, N.J.) surrendered a grand slam to freshman catcher Jimmy Sheppard (Gladstone, N.J.).

The Devils extended their lead to 5-3 in the seventh as junior outfielder Lucas Cittone (Highland Park, N.J.) launched a two-out, pinch-hit home run to left off Picerno.

FDU, which had won four games in row heading into the game against Stevens, was led by Sheppard, who was 1-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.  Cittone went 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored.  Warger (2-3) was saddled with the loss as he allowed six runs and four hits.  Junior pitcher Christopher Jones (Hamilton, N.J.) had a solid outing as he gave up five hits and three runs over seven innings.

FDU returns to action on Saturday, April 15, with a doubleheader at Scranton beginning at 1 pm.

Midili wins game, Buchter sets hitting streak mark as Rutgers-Camden baseball team edges FDU-Florham

CAMDEN (NJ) – Sophomore right fielder Joe Midili (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) doubled home senior catcher Nick Turekian (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) with the winning run in the 10th inning and the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team edged Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham, 7-6, here Tuesday in a game which saw junior center fielder Nate Buchter (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) set a school record by extending his hitting streak to 19 games.

Rutgers-Camden improves to 16-7 overall with its third straight win and ninth victory in 10 games. FDU-Florham falls to 9-10, snapping a five-game winning streak.

The Raptors, who tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out RBI single by junior left fielder Mike Morris (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township), won it in the 10th when Turekian opened with a double to left and scored on Midili’s double to right.

That comeback highlighted a big day for Rutgers-Camden, which saw Buchter rip a first-inning single to extend his hitting streak to 19 games. Buchter, who has hit safely in 22 of the Raptors’ 23 games, broke the mark of 18 by Bob Diepold, which was set in 2001. Diepold, now one of the Scarlet Raptors’ assistant coaches, saw his mark tied Saturday in the Raptors’ doubleheader sweep at Ramapo College.

Buchter added a third-inning triple and finished his day 2-for-4 with one run, one RBI and an intentional walk. He is now batting .424.

Morris, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 to stretch his hitting streak to 10 games and raise his average to .377.

After Rutgers-Camden took an early 5-2 lead through four innings, the Devils chipped away with one run in the fifth and tied the game with a two-run sixth which featured a walk, three hits and a big error. Freshman third baseman Bill Smith (Howell, NJ/Freehold Township) had an RBI single in the frame and senior shortstop Jim DaSilva (Morristown, NJ/Ridge) reached on a two-out infield error which plated the tying run.

FDU scored an unearned run in the seventh to take the lead, sparked by an error which put sophomore first baseman Dan Bellino (Jackson, NJ/St. Rose) on base to open the inning. He later scored on a single by freshman catcher Jimmy Sheppard (Gladstone, NJ/Bernards).

Trailing, 6-5, the Scarlet Raptors opened the ninth with a walk to senior shortstop Brian Jakubowski (Audubon, NJ/Audubon). He was sacrificed to second by senior first baseman Matt Calloway (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional), and Buchter drew an intentional walk. Following a fly out against relief pitcher Glenn Regan (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep), Morris delivered his game-tying single.

Regan, 3-2, took the loss, working 2/3-inning and allowing three hits and the one earned run. Junior Jason Ronca (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley), the last of three Scarlet Raptor hurlers, picked up the win. Ronca, 2-1, worked two shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk. He struck out four.
