Cynthia Nelson enters her third season at the helm of the Devils' swimming program. In her first year, she led the Devils to one of their best season the team has experienced. FDU had their best finish at the MASCAC Championships in the history of the school and broke a total of 26 team records on the season. Coach Nelson expects a strong freshman class to add to the returning upperclassmen.
Coach Nelson attended Drew University from 1995-1999 and was an important member of the program. During her four years, she learned her strength was not in breaststroke but in distance freestyle. She contributed to the team's second place finish in the MASCAC in both her junior and senior seasons as a top 12 finisher in the 500 free and 400 IM, and as a top six finisher in the 1650 free. She graduated from Drew with a double major in psychology and women's studies.
After graduation, she moved to Lewisburg, PA, from 1999-2001 and was the Assistant Men's and Women's Swimming Coach at Bucknell University, a Division I Patriot League program. During her two seasons at Bucknell, she tutored the distance swimmers.
In 2001, Nelson became the Head Coach for the YMCA of Greater Bergen County Swim Team and coached there until 2006. The YMCA team had over 150 swimmers and she capped her career there by coaching a YMCA National and USA Sectional swimmer.
She also worked as a coach in 2001 and 2003 for the Stanford University International Swimming Camp. Nelson has attended the World Swimming Clinic in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and is an American Swimming Coaches Association Level 4 coach.
Currently, she resides in Basking Ridge, NJ
