MADISON, N.J. (June 6, 2017) - Following the retirement of former director of athletics Bill Klika, current Associate Director of Athletics
Roger Kindel has been named the director of athletics on an interim basis.
He served as the Devils Head Men's Basketball Coach for 28 years, and has been in his current role as Associate Director of Athletics since 1980. His 328 wins at the helm of the men's basketball program represent the most in program history, and was honored by the conference with Coach of the Year honors five times.
The venerable Kindel has also served as the Head Men's Golf Coach for 26 years, leading the team to four straight Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championships in the late 2000's. The team qualified for the NCAA Championships each from 2007-2009, finishing as high as 33rd in 2008-09. The Devils also finished 37th in 2012-13, after winning a fifth MAC Freedom title.
Three of his golfers have been inducted into the FDU-Florham Hall of Fame, in addition to the 12 men's basketball that have also been voted in. Additionally, his 1989-90 and 1998-99 men's basketball teams have also entered the Hall of Fame.
Prior to his time at FDU, Kindel played basketball at Seton Hall University, and can still be found in the record books. His 186 assists during the 1971-72 campaign currently rank him fifth all-time, but at the time of his graduation was ranked second. In 2016, he was honored by the MAC with the Lou Sorrentino Award, which is presented to the Middle Atlantic Conference athletics administrator who has had a sustained an influential role in conference and national affairs and embodies the NCAA Division III philosophy.
