MADISON, N.J. – In a tightly contest double overtime MAC Freedom Tournament semifinal match, the FDU-Florham men's soccer team was edged out by the Eastern University Eagles 1-0 in Madison, N.J.
Less than a week ago, the Devils (15-2-2) defeated the Eagles (9-8-1) in St. David's, Pa. but Eastern got their revenge and despite being outshot by FDU-Florham 16-14, they still managed to prevent the game from going into penalty kicks with a late goal in the second overtime period.
One of FDU-Florham's best scoring chances came in the closing minutes of the first half when senior forward Chaz Armand sent a booming kick from the left side of the field towards the Eagles' goal, but it ricocheted off of the crossbar. Armand managed to place another shot on goal right before the horn sounded. However, it was saved by Eastern's goalkeeper Quentin Keibler.
The Devils defense was aggressive throughout the match, limiting the Eagles' shots on goal to just two in the second half. Both shots on goal were saved by FDU-Florham senior goalkeeper Nick Mihalik.
At the conclusion of regulation, the two teams remained scoreless. In the first overtime period, junior Andrew Ruane got a shot off but it sailed wide.
The second overtime featured a lot more physicality as the two teams battled to keep the ball off of their side of the field. However, with less than two minutes left Cade Harmon got the ball for Eastern and dribbled it to the left side of the field. Harmon took aim at the Devils' net and buried a shot on the ground into the left corner of the net for the game-winning goal to help his team advance to the MAC Freedom Tournament Championship Game.
