Wagensommer played women's tennis at FDU from 1982 to 1984. Named
FDU's Athlete of the Year in 1982-84, Wagensommer was also team
MVP in 1982, 1983 and 1984. She was also Middle Atlantic Conference
Champion in both 1983 and 1984. During her junior year she made
FDU history as the first tennis player to win an individual championship
at the Middle Atlantic Conference tournament. Wagensommer gained
national attention in the spring of 1983 when she was selected
to attend the NCAA Division III National Women's Tennis Championship.
As an unseeded player, she upset the sixth seed in her first
round. Her loss came in the quarter-finals to the first seeded
player, who eventually won the tournament. Her performance earned
her All-American status. Wagensommer's senior year was equally
impressive, as again she received a bid for the NCAA Division
III National Women's Tennis Championship. She was the only New
Jersey player to advance to the quarter finals. Again, her loss
was to the eventual national champion. However, her performance
earned her fifth place in the championship and a spot on the
All-American team. |
