    Ira Epstein was a defensive standout for FDU's football program during the 1980's. He played on the defensive line from 1983 to 1985, after transferring to FDU from Wagner College. A three-year starter at nose tackle, Epstein lead the FDU Jersey Devils in tackles and tackles for a loss for three straight years. He was named Pizza Hut All-American in 1983 and was twice selected first team Jewish All-American, in 1983 and 1984. In 1984, Epstein was selected first team "All East" by the Associated Press. Also in 1984, he was selected to the Kodak All-American first team by the Division III coaches, which signaled his achievement as the best at his position nationally. Epstein was selected FDU's Athlete of the Year in 1984-85. As the first FDU football player to be recognized nationally, Ira was one of the best defensive linemen in the country during the 1980's.
