Wilkes Outlasts FDU, 32-19

Madison, NJ - Wilkes scored five times. FDU scored five times. But unfortunately for the Devils, four FDU scores were field goals and all five of the Colonels scores were touchdowns.

The Devils got off to a good start on Rich Dwyer's (New Providence, NJ) opening kickoff when Adam Bruno (Marlton, NJ) picked up Floyd Allen's fumble at the Wilkes 29-yard line. FDU marched down to the six-yard line, but couldn't get any further and settled for the field goal.

At the half, the score was 14-9 and things didn't seem out of reach at all for FDU, which was 3-for-3 up to that point on field goals. The Devils had gotten into position to score three times up to that point and converted each of them into three points, but just hadn't found the endzone yet.

The third quarter saw two Wilkes TD's and a scoreless 15 minutes for FDU. By the time the period ended, things didn't look so good for the Devils, as the score suddenly was 26-9  - but FDU didn't give up. Dwyer hit a 36-yard field goal, his fourth of the game, to cut the lead to 26-12. The Devils looked like they had a good chance to make it 26-19 when Simon Ziobro (Linden, NJ) recovered a fumble by Wilkes' Josh Bradley . FDU quarterback Mark Pollifrone (Manalapan, NJ) completed a pass to Fred Peters (New Brunswick, NJ) for 13 yards, then after an incomplete and a penalty, Pollifrone completed a pass to Mike Quigley (Manalapan, NJ) for 38 yards to put the Devils on the Wilkes two yard line. Pollifrone went back to pass, looking for a diving receiver in the endzone, but Jerry Superko made a tremendous play, diving in front and picking off the pass in the endzone and making an FDU comeback a much less plausible concept.

The Colonels went three-and-out on the next series, and with 2:32 left, the Devils mounted one more comeback attempt.
However, things didn't work out for FDU as Mark Henry picked off a Pollifrone pass and went 42 yards for a touchdown to make it 32-12.

After the Devils blocked the PAT, the FDU offense came on the field with Phil Revien (Huntington, NY) quarterbacking. After throwing two incomplete passes, Revien hit Kuziemski for 16 yards and then J.D. Potynski (Hillsborough, NJ) for 20 more yards. A personal foul on Wilkes moved FDU up to the Wilkes 28, and on first and 10, Revien hit Joe Johnson (Hackettstown, NJ) for a touchdown. Dwyer hit the extra point to put the score at 32-19.

The Devils attempted an on-sides kick, but Frank McCabe picked it up cleanly at the FDU 45 and took a knee. Wilkes quarterback Bradley took on each on the last two downs of the game to finish off the Devils.

Pollifrone threw for a career-high 314 yards on 23-for-51 passing. Quigley caught a game-high 12 passes for at team-high 201 yards.

Dwyer went 4-for-4 on field goal attempts, his longest a 36-yarder. He punted five times for 156 yards. Mike Ortiz (Weehawkin, NJ) had 13 tackles, a forced fumble, and a tackle for loss, while Paul Gundersdorf (Hackettstown, NJ) had nine tackles. Erik Stanislawczyk (Monroe, NJ) finished with eight tackles, a tackle for loss and one sack. Kevin Williams (Edison, NJ) blocked a punt, and rookie WR Tim Carlock (Burlington , NJ) had two blocked kicks.
