Madison, NJ - With FDU leading the #18 Pioneers 21-19, Widener's Mike Granato tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Matt Giello with 1:44 left in the fourth quarter to put Widener ahead of the Devils, 25-21.
The Pioneers went for two, but Granato's pass was intercepted by Mike Ortiz (Weehawkin, NJ) in the endzone. Ortiz ran the ball back 100 yards for a two- point score, cutting the score to 25-23. From the FDU 28-yard line, Mark Pollifrone (Manalapan, NJ) passed to Colin Grenon (Hackettstown, NJ) for a gain of 23 yards to put the Devils on the Widener 49-yard line, but after a failed pass attempt, the Devils ran out of time.
Down 13-0 at the half, FDU came out strong in the third quarter, emerging with a 14-13 lead by the time the fourth quarter opened. With just over six minutes left in the third, Ed Cracchiolo (Marlboro, NJ) ran it in from the one-yard line to put the Devils on the board. Pollifrone then completed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Keith O'Hara (Hackettstown, NJ) to put FDU up one with 1:15 left.
With 10:47 left in the fourth and Widener on their own 13-yard line, FDU's Jon Roman (Wayne, NJ) barrelled around the offensive line and blindsided Granato, causing an errant pass. The ball flew upwards behind Granato and Anthony Gagliardo (East Stroudsburg, PA) grabbed it out of the air and ran it in for a touchdown, making the score 21-13 at that point.
FDU capitalized on that fumble by Widener, and in all snatched up two of the Pioneers four fumbles. The Devil defense also intercepted four Granato passes, not including Ortiz's and Waleed Abduelal's (State Island, NY) interceptions on the two-point conversion attempts.
Pollifrone threw 15 completions on 31 attempts, picking up 130 yards and one touchdown. Fred Peters (New Brunswick, NJ) threw one pass in the game, hitting Mike Quigley (Manalapan, NJ) for 42 yards, setting up Pollifrone to throw four yards to O'Hara.
Punter/Kicker Rich Dwyer (New Providence) had a busy day for FDU. He booted 11 punts for a total of 341 yards, averaging 31 yards per punt.
Granato threw for over 300 yards for the third time in his
career, and broke 400 for the first time ever. His 425 yards today
breaks the school record, and he became only the second player
in Widener history to throw for over 400 yards in a game, the
last being Vic Ameye vs. Delaware Valley in 1995.
Ortiz finished the game with 14 tackles for the Devils, while
Abduelal and Sean McDonnell (Toms River, NJ) both had
six. Tom Pouliot (Hillsborough, NJ) was credited with five,
putting him just 9 away from holding FDU's all-time mark. Abduelal,
Gagliardo, Dave Dondero (Port Monmouth, NJ), and Paul
Gundersdorf (Hackettstown, NJ) made interceptions for FDU.
