UPDATE # 20 - Summer 2004

Football

For the guys that stuck with us, we had a tremendous spring, breaking too many personal records to count! Our "advanced" group made phenomenal progress, especially after we targeted their weaknesses. The strength staff is very proud of the guys and the effort they put forth through some tough times this spring. We know that they will continue to be leaders for the football program, both on the field and off. Congratulations go to Paul Koontz and Dan Huff, who both set new records in the Index this spring. Paul shattered his old Index record by 91 points!

The team took off the last two weeks of the semester, for finals preparations, and resumes training May 17th. They only have 13 weeks to prepare for camp. After the brutal workouts this spring, we'll switch back to a general strength and mass phase for the first 4 weeks of summer. The last 9 weeks we'll resume the max effort/dynamic speed workouts and continue them through camp. They'll be on a 4 day a week routine until camp.

Perhaps the biggest advantage for the guys was their ability to stay in football condition throughout the spring conditioning workouts. While less "enlightened" players couldn't even drag themselves to the weight room on heavy running/agility days, this group was still setting max records in the squat and clean! They will certainly be prepared for the upcoming season.

Women's Soccer

As usual, this team was a workhorse in the weight room. I can't say enough about their work ethic. We even instituted speed training sessions, which were so popular that we'll be doing them with the other sports next year. They'll be on a 3 day a week routine through camp.

Men's Basketball

Basketball went through another physically grueling season this year. They'll crank things up on May 17th, and go four days a week until school starts.

Women's Lacrosse

Watch out soccer! This group plowed right through their season, continuing to impress in the weight room. I expect big things from this program in the future. They'l be training 3 days a week until school starts.

Field Hockey

Many of the field hockey women also played lacrosse. Most of those who did not joined us for their first off season in the weight room. They too will be a force in the future.

Women's Basketball

This team found their way into the weight room this semester, and should continue to make progress. We trust that they will continue training hard this summer!

Volleyball

Several of the volleyball athletes also found their way into the weight room, and did a super job this spring. This is the beginning of great things for their program!

OTHER NEWS

  • We had an "unexpected" visit from our old Moldovan friend, Vova Poppov, this spring. He spent two weeks helping coach our athletes in the weight room. Strange, there's no language barrier in the gym!
  • We hope to have final plans for the Armenians to visit this June, including a former world record holder in the snatch!
  • The Devils Training Hall for olympic weightlifting is under way! If you are interested in olympic weightlifting, or need a place to train for olympic weightlifting, please join us! See the link provided at our home page.
