UPDATE # 19 - Winter 2003/2004
Football
The football team began its off season training on Monday, Dec. 1. During this phase, the players will be doing a general strength training program for recovery and muscle mass. They'll be training four days a week, with a relatively high volume. This will continue until the winter break ends at the end of January, When the players return to school, they'll be "pre-tested" in the clean, squat, and flat bench press. At this time, the players will resume again on a muscle mass program for about 4 weeks. This year, we are splitting the team into three general groups, based upon their needs. We consulted with the coaching staff to determine what each player needs most to make a contribution to the team. The groups will be 1) "average" player - needs to gain quality mass of 5-15 pounds, as well as work on his speed/explosiveness. 2.) "size" - this player is more than 15 punds too light for his position, or just can't maintain a quality bodyweight. 3.) "advanced"- this player is near his limit for size, and has a very solid training base. He must be able to handle an intense training load, as he will be training using the conjugate method.
Each of these groups will have a different emphasis in their program. The average group will use a traditional western periodization model, and go through different mass, strength, and power phases. He'll eventually use a strength/speed split on his workouts. The size group will use a periodization model that focuses on muscle mass development. They too will eventually progress to a strength/speed split on workouts. The advanced player will focus on the conjugate method of periodization. He'll use max effort and dynamic speed days to prepare himself for next year.
Women's Soccer
After a fantastic season, the team resumed training Dec 1., and we'll start speed training with them as well when school resumes. They'll be using a three day routine when they return.
Men's Basketball
Wow! This team got stronger in a short period of time. They now look to keep the progress up during the long season. We're training them two days a week until the season ends in February.
Women's Lacrosse
This group did a fabulous job during the fall. They'll continue doing a basic program three days a week until their season begins in February.
Field Hockey
Field Hockey began training in November. They'll be on a three day a week routine until their spring season begins in March.
