UPDATE # 31 - Winter 2008Football We're very excited to have a high number of football players training with us this off-season! We started lifting again after the Thanksgiving break, and had the players do a basic 4 week GPP block. They were then sent home with a 6 week program for Christmas (we have a long break), and the workouts began to get more specialized by player needs & positions. We've tinkered the workouts to include a mass emphasis, power emphasis, learning the basics, kickers, etc., all depending upon the needs of the player. The general template is the same, but there's important differences in each of the workout types... Thank God for computer programs, or this would be VERY tough to do for this many people! Several positon records have fallen already; we'll post the changes as the semester winds down. This team is working hard - and smart- and we'll be actively involved with their on-field "spring" football workouts as well! Women's Soccer Women's Soccer struggled for the first time in many years this season; we were very young. As this group matures, and learns how to train and condition, they will return to one of the top teams in the conference. They've resumed a 3x/week schedule this semester, and we're still teaching them the basics of a college strength & conditioning program! Baseball started down the path of following an organized program this fall; but we still have lots of work to do. For some ridiculous reason baseball players - in general across our country - still haven't got the message about weightlifting! We have work to do....They'll be going 2x/week during their VERY long season! Men’s Basketball has been making progress, but they too are very young. There's no graduating seniors on this squad! Much like football, we have started to break up the workouts by player needs. We have several players who simply need to gain muscle mass; while there's other who need to work on the transfer of strength training to the court. They are following their in-season program now, and we'll rev it up to 3 or 4 days a week after our spring break. Softball did speed work with us this fall, and we are conditioning the team through the pre-season at practice! As more players begin to realize the importance of strength training (see baseball, above) this team will really start to impress... Men's Tennis recently joined us in the weight room. "Better late than never", we're going 3x/week of lifting and running for their 5 week pre-season. We'll follow up with an in-season program, and then a solid year of off-season training....Look out! Men's Lacrosse joined us mid fall, and was by far the surprise group of the year. They worked incredibly hard this fall, lifting 3x/week, and performing both speed and conditioning workouts 2x/week through December! They made HUGE strength and power gains this fall...It got cold at night in December, but we were training hard on the field, working on speed, aglity, and conditioning. We have just begun a 2x/week in-season program, and we will go year round from now on. We can't wait to see what this group is capable of! Women's Basketball trained with us this fall to learn better athletic movement skills and body control. We wish nothing but the best for this group, who are doing great with a VERY small number of players on the team! Other News - We finally got a laser timing system. From now on, all times - including the shuttles - will be laser timed! There’s a lot more going on, and not a lot of room to type. If you want to know more, please contact us at klika@fdu.edu |
