MADISON, NJ -- Six FDU-Madison baseball players earned recognition by the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference Freedom League today. Two were also honored by the New Jersey College Baseball Association. Head coach Jack Sullivan (FDU-Madison '91) was named Co-Coach of the Year for the MAC Freedom League.
Ed Litsky (Marlton,
NJ) earned a First Team spot, after posting a .342 average
this year and stealing a team-leading 12 bases. The senior centerfielder
ended his career as the Devils' all-time hits leader with 167,
breaking Andy Paulus' mark of 153. After knocking in a team-high
23 RBI this year, he ranks second all-time with 95, just three
behind Paulus' 98. His .369 career batting average ranks second
all-time. His 1997 average of .434 is best-ever in school history.
Matt Bernhard (New
Providence, NJ) was named to the Second Team while being named
to the NJCBA Division II/III First Team. The senior third baseman
led the team in batting average at .345 and slugging percentage
at .507. He hit a team-high nine doubles and belted two triples
and two home runs. He is third on the career list with 23 doubles.
He ranks sixth on the all-time hits list with 111.
Glenn Barker (Florham
Park, NJ) made the Second Team of the MAC and the NJBCA Second
Team. The leadoff batter and second baseman for the Devils, Barker
hit .327 while scoring 25 runs. He also knocked in 13 runs, drew
20 walks, smacked two home runs, and stole six bases.
Mike Passe (North Plainfield),
Greg Reisner (Norwood, NJ), and Andrew Weinberg (Cherry
Hill, NJ) also made the Second Team of the MAC. Junior
shortstop Passe batted .303 with six doubles, three triples and
two homers. He knocked in 20 runs and took a team- high five hit-by-pitches.
Senior DH
Reisner posted a
.314 batting average, scored a team- high 26 runs, knocked in
20 runs, and led the squad in sacrifices with five.
Weinberg earned a 4-2 record on the hill for the Devils. The right-handed sophomore posted a 2.59 ERA in 41 2/3 innings. He allowed only 12 earned runs and eight walks for the year while striking out 17.
Sullivan earned Co-Coach
of the Year honors in the MAC Freedom League for leading the Devils
to a three-way tie for first. FDU, which finished with a conference
record of 8-4, were picked to finish sixth out of seven.
